Started working on changing the brakes on my wife's 2019 Kia Sorento this weekend. All went well until I got to the front driver side. Piston was frozen and would not retract all the way. No problem, I'll just replace the caliper, right?

Went to RockAuto and ordered a PowerStop front driver side caliper. Went out this evening to replace it and it is not the right one. It is stamped "L", the part number L6463S is correct from everything I can find. The problem is, the bleeder is on the bottom of the caliper, not the top. The cutout for the brake line to sit in the casting on the back is not in the correct location on the caliper. It actually matches what would be on the right side of the car, based on how the brake line is routed.

Now everything I can find shows this orientation is correct for a front driver side caliper, meaning that is what the images for the product show whether I'm looking at RockAuto, Powerstop's website, Autozone, etc. It's not. Anyone ran into this before? It's almost like I need a caliper for the front right side.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would drive to a parts store or dealership and ask for the part, to compare.

There may have been a revision, or at very least verify if the RockAuto part is compatible.

The Power Stop L6462S is a remanufactured front passenger (right) side brake caliper with an included mounting bracket. It is designed as a direct, bolt-on OEM replacement for worn or damaged factory calipers and comes with new bleeder screws, guide pins, and stainless-steel hardware

It's been a long time since I worked on brakes, but I'm struggling to think of what good a bleeder on the bottom of the caliper would do. You'd just be squirting out brake fluid rather than air.

I agree that I'd take it back and verify that you got the right one...which it appears you did not.

That’s what is throwing me off. I ordered and received the L6463S. At least according to the shipping receipt and product box.

It's not that complicated. Somebody messed up. A caliper for the right side got put in the box for the left side. Obtain another left front caliper. Ordering another from Rock Auto runs the risk of the same mistake being made for an entire production run, so I'd recommend getting it locally. Take the caliper with you for A, to match up, and B, to get your core charge back without a second trip. Also, a restricted brake hose can make your caliper pistons not retract. Do the pistons push in with the bleeder open?

It doesn't do any good. When the bleeder is on the bottom, everything above it is an air space.

I am a fan of Rock Auto and have ordered almost exclusively from them for years, but the last time I ordered a power steering line for our minivan, the part that came in the box was used. Somebody either swapped it out and returned the used part, or decided they didn't need it after installing it. Either way, I sent it back and got a replacement. So they definitely have the capacity for a major screw up.

Planning on stopping by the auto parts store tomorrow. Very possible someone at RockAuto boxed it incorrectly.

No, the piston doesn’t move with the bleeder open. It’s got about 1/4 inch to completely retract and it won’t budge.

One of the most prevalent, and dumbest, problems in automotive manufacturing is putting the right part in the left box & vice versa. You can put the lines that make L & R in different countries and still end up with them mixed, ask me how I know.
