I stumbled across this clip on You Tube. Proof that you used to be able to laugh at yourself. Sammy Davis Jr. and Don Rickles - two guys who were obviously friends and had respect for one another.
I somehow don't think it would go over so well today.
Some damn fine folks in that clip. And if you ask me, a damn sight closer to true equality than the fake shit today. Real friends and no thought police shushing everyone into their way of thinking.

What I like about those old roasts is that the default goto joke was mentioning someone's genetalia or sexual activity or a quick expletive.
They actually used their brains to figure out how to get a laugh.
"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

God I miss that era. It was a time where virtually nothing was off limits and everyone had a sense of humor and could laugh for hours at each other while still remaining the best of friends. Yep, we sure have come a long way as a society since those days.

You can stream Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts on Amazon Prime unless they rotated them out by now. My son a couple of his buddies and myself watched a few episodes one night including the Sammy Davis Jr. one after a few cocktails. I remembered watching these back in the day so I knew what to expect. Mr son and his buddies laughed their asses off and couldn't believe some of the jokes.
It was fun for me to watch their reactions and how they've been conditioned to think. Like the first time I introduced them to Blazing Saddles.
