snwghstWarning!! Complete Geek out level music archival preservation stuff
Number of years ago we heard about all the tape masters burning in California. That was just one location for a single label group. There are many locations. Here is a deep look into Universal Music Group (UMG) preservation with their Iron Mountain Entertainment Services.

0-0Must say that Iron Mountain is famous down here because fires destroyed it, twice.
Several firefighters died in the first fire when one of the outside walls collapsed on top of them.
Can’t remember if there were casualties in the last fire.
They happened quite recently and not too many years apart. Same location.
It was never made public if the fires were accidental or not. My guess is they were intentional. Have seen it happen before with important public records.

architectI thought the idea of putting all your eggs in a single basket so as to concentrate protective resources has been thoroughly discredited. Better to disperse multiple replications to multiple storage facilities with far less chance that all will suffer damage at the same time. Popular online digital archive repositories, e.g. Pirate Bay, have already provided a working model for this strategy, as do most competent backup techniques.
