Rear view mirror camera, saw something I did not know existed.

holdemRear view mirror camera, saw something I did not know existed.
I am pulling up to and was then sitting at a stop sign this morning, about 4-5 cars backed up waiting to get through. I look up and there is a fancy Ford pick up truck in front of me, and I notice something weird about his rearview mirror. After staring for a moment, I realize his rear view "mirror" is actually a LCD screen with a camera view of what is behind him.
I knew there were back up cameras that showed the back up image in the corner of the mirror while the vehicle is in reverse. But I had no idea there were "mirrors" where the entire area was filled with an image all the time, and not just while in reverse. It looked pretty nice too, because the field of view was much wider than what you would normally see in a regular rear view mirror.
Does anyone have one of these fancy mirrors? Do you like it?

P250UA5I think GM was the first to introduce it on Cadillac & now some of the higher trim trucks & SUVs.
Didn't know Ford had it as an option.
IIRC, DOT hasn't legalized/authorized camera for side-view mirrors, but I'm sure they're not far behind. Would definitely improve aerodynamics.

V-TailMy wife's 2019 RAV4 has this. She can flick a switch; in one position it's a standard mirror, in the other position it is a display screen for the rear view camera, with zoom capability.

ShaqlComing soon to a "side-view mirror" as well... Once they get the rule changed, they can replace those mirrors with cameras.

vinnybassI'm normally not one for more gadgetry, but this one seems like it would be good if your truck has a cap or bed full of stuff.

mcrimmOur daughter has this in her new Toyota Highlander Hybrid. I would really like this feature as we travel long distances with the back of our SUV very full.
I'm sorry if I hurt you feelings when I called you stupid - I thought you already knew - Unknown

CooksterI believe that some motorcycle manufacturer’s are looking at and might be developing this technology for side-view mirror production use.
Aftermarket kits are already available to up-fit current bikes.

PalAlthough I am retired now I started to deliver fire trucks for a local company that builds and repairs them. Several of these trucks have this feature.

MikeGLII just purchased a 2017 Ford Transit 250 that has no windows other than the windshield, front driver/passenger. The back up camera display is very old and small, so I've been looking at replacing it. The most viable option that I've found is a camera that replaces the 3rd brake light and then transmits to a display that you mount where the rear view mirror would normally be. What I also liked about it was that it could be wired to include additional cameras and can also be wired so it's constantly on versus just as a back up camera.

joel9507I saw these years ago on some rental car agency shuttle-busses that had no rear windows.
I can see some advantages but it does make driving the car dependent on yet another bit of electronics/wiring.

rsboloMy RV had this option for all mirrors. Obviously a big class A diesel pusher doesn't have a rearview mirror but a camera and a 12" screen made it nice to see what was behind me.
Those cameras did a pretty fair job on the sides and blind spots as well.

HRKMore cameras are inevitable as we move to autonomous driving vehicles they will need sensors and cameras to position properly...
Cameras for Mirrors are great, until one fails and it's $1500 to fix your passenger side camera vs $100.... But they will have advantages, auto tilt when backing is a great feature, not all cars have it, but it's great
Could be part of Fords Trailer backup assist feature

Sailor1911My GMC PU has it. I have a love/hate relationship with it. The focal plane is different from your regular RV mirror. So, if you wear glasses, you may find that the regular mirror is in focus while the camera view is not. Consequently, I tend to stay in RV mirror mode more than camera mode. Upside is that the camera view is a wider angle than the regular mirror so you can see more in it that you do with the RV mirror.

I agree. Those side view mirrors take a beating when you go through the average car wash. Then with the constant opening and slamming shut of the doors there is that too.

vinnybassSo, apparently (according to that video) I can't use it with a shell without some kind of jury-rigged workaround. Bogus.

BigSwedeYou can get two auxiliary cameras and put them wherever you want. It does have to be ordered with the aux camera provisions though

egregoreIn an episode of
NCIS: New Orleans these cameras were used to find a suspect hiding in an alley under a dumpster. They spotted his feet sticking out.

Yes, fiction, but I can see a use for this to spot someone sneaking up on you.
