I passed through a small harbor town. They still had an active fishing industry it seemed. Lots of seafood restaurants. The fish was actually very good (although not all fish was locally sourced). Of course, at each place I visited, I had the "best home made clam chowder" and once, even oyster chowder.

Some were decent, some were embarrassing. None were better than canned Tony's..... And for the prices I pad for a bowl, they should have been at least 2x better. Perhaps they are cost cutting.....? Disappointed....

We just finished our second case of Tony's clam chowder. Good stuff.

We also ordered a case of the Lobster bisque to try out, and it is not for me.

I need to order more. Or start making chowder myself. I tried about 6-7 different chowders in Morro. Dorn’s was best but even that was lacking. Not much clam taste and hardly any clams. It was very mild; almost like a chowder base still waiting for an ingredient. I actually added two pads of butter to add some taste. Oyster chowder was a little bitter for me. I finished it but wouldn’t necessarily order again. Tony’s is the way to go; tasty and easy.

I read about Tony's clam chowder on this forum. I like clam chowder, but I am not a big fan. I prefer Cream of Crab soup. But after all the positive comments, I had to try it. So the next time I went to Florida, I took a detour and visited Tony's. It was well worth the trip. The chowder is excellent and so was the seafood platter.

since introduction to it via this forum, Tony's has become my own favorite.

Even the endless varieties & much touted local Oregon Coast versions made In House, Tony's has my vote.

konata88,

Sorry you were disappointed. I must admit it has been several decades since I spent any significant time up that way.

The chowder we had at numerous places while at Bath Iron Works, Maine, outfitting a new construction ship, were universally outstanding. Also was blessed to have connected with a local lobsterman and his 5 boats to buy fresh catch cheap on the docks.

Someday, I would love to take a trip to Maine for lobster and seafood. I spent some time in NY / CT when I was younger and am somewhat loath to go back east. Hated summers and winters there. But my love for seafood draws me to Maine.

I had similar experiences with clam chowder in Boston. Some was pretty good, but most that I tried was just average and a bit bland. Some places were quite expensive too. I spent several weeks there on a couple of different trips. Tony's is still my favorite. I'd love to get up to Maine, and we've been thinking about a trip up there.

Well, I guess I'll have to order some Tony's to try. My wife and I both love clam chowder and have had some excellent chowders on the Oregon coast. We typically like to eat at small Mom & Pop cafes and restaurants on the coast because they all seem to have their own clam chowder recipes that have been pasted down in the family.

In 1995 I spent 6+ months on a project in Wiscasset at Maine Yankee Nuclear plant. Worked 6/12’s and hit the Boothbay fisherman’s co-op almost daily. 1-3/4 lb. lobster, fresh off the boat. Cooked with slaw, hush puppies and a drink. Don’t hate me, but I actually got sick of eating lobster. Smile
It was a great summer.
