17 years old.
Left Hand.
Appeared about 2 weeks ago.
Does not itch or hurt.
No rash anywhere else.
Skin is very dry...feels like the ashy point of your elbow.

Cannot determine anything that has changed as far as food diet.

It is timed when he had a really bad cold and he took some doses of EmergenC and Zinc. We stopped giving him that when the rash appeared (next day).

For something that localized it's probably not diet related. Looks to me like a mild case of eczema (dermatitis). I suggest getting some over the counter eczema cream like CeraVe, Aveeno Eczema Therapy, Or Aquaphor. It should start clearing up after a few days of regular use.

Other things you can consider are changing the soap he uses or checking the humidity in your house. If your house is very dry because you have the heat running, him being sick and stuck at home can dry out skin and cause rashes like that. Dropping in a nightstand humidifier can also help.

If it doesn't get better in about a week of regular use of eczema cream and your house isn't dry (50% humidity or better) then go see a dermatologist.

I second the eczema guess. I used to get it like that in the winter months. Someone suggested that it was from the antibacterial soap. I stopped using antibacterial soap and it went away.

Maybe he was washing his hands more when he was sick? Mine came about with the birth of our first son. Changing diapers and washing bottles meant more hand washing.

Well my first question would be does it itch but you already ruled that out.
Some OTC cortisone cream may work if regular moisturizer doesn’t.

That happens when my wife gets an allergic reaction to some scented soaps or lotion.

She has been using SebaMed body wash and lotion for years with good results. https://www.amazon.com/gp/prod...0?ie=UTF8&th=1Though it may not clear it up initially, it can help keep it from flaring up.

The DR. Prescribed an ointment called Triamcinolone Acetonide.

That stuff is pretty slick on poison oak rashes. Really knocks down the itching.

Tell him he is really lucky. Some young males go blind.

Big Grin

It's clearly an allergic response to something. Has he had an antihistamine like Benadryl?

I got something like that on my cheek from my dog licking me. Has he petted any animals lately?

In a former life as a mechanic, I often had similar rashes due to exposure to various cleaners and chemicals. I seem to recall interior cleaning products caused reactions like this.

Has he recently used any strong detergents like carpet cleaning solutions, or perhaps something in a science or biology class?

Picture not detailed enough but, if it doesn't itch, it ain't Eczema.

It's location also indicates some type of allergic reaction IMHO. Contact dermatitis.

Contact dermatitis -- by the shape on the back of his hand it is possible he brushed against something (plant, shrub) that he had a reaction to. Triamcinolone Acetonide is, for me in Fl, a prescription medication. Very effective and CeraVe is OTC and also quite soothing.

Eczema is a broad category of topical skin conditions. You're thinking of atopic dermatitis which is the most common type.
Types of Eczema

It's very possible it was contact dermatitis. The treatment for all of these is basically the same though.

Not a doc, but caneau and dinorat’s replies prompted me to reply. I developed dermatitis on my left hand pretty badly from my workplace. It looked just like that and worse. I was spraying parts with super glue accelerator and my left hand was catching the overspray. Heptane, if you practically bathe in it, turns out, can give you a pretty bad rash. The doctor recommended CeraVe or Aquaphor a few times a day for a few weeks, and it worked. It certainly can’t hurt for your son to try it and see if it improves. Good luck. Smile

Shugart or one of our medicos will know for sure, but I think Triamcinolone Acetonide is a type of cortisone cream, similar to Cortaid which is OTC. I have had a Rx for it in the past, and just used generic OTC cortisone cream after the Triamcinolone ran out.
