And to add insult to injury, the original crime the guy committed...he stole a shirt and two belts from Walmart before beating feet.
At least that's the story making it's way around local radio.

Our police dropped a bomb on a rooftop which ended up destroying 58 homes. The entire block, and then some.
The houses are currently in their third rebuild. 3rd time is the charm? An employer is rebuilding a dozen of them right now. The gift which keeps on giving.

A big part of a national problem. Every little hamlet in the country has to have a SWAT team now.

I suspect that if the perp had barricaded himself inside a government building that the police would have kanoodled a way to handle the situation short of near total destruction. Perhaps not, but that is what I suspect.
They probably would have been even more careful had it been the police chief's home. Perhaps not, but probably.
But seriously, this was just a commoner's home. Who cares?

If the inhabitants and especially the children were already outside of the house, the perp was in there alone with no hostages and it wasn't a sniper situation, why not just cut the power and wait him out? It's not like he would have lasted that long and there were no exigent circumstances requiring immediate entry. It wasn't like the perp was ever going to slip away once the house was surrounded.

It was insured, but the insurance paid out a fraction of the value of the house. And I understand there is a difference between rebuild value and sale value. The house was pretty much totaled, and I am not sure that the insurance paid out as much as they might have in a fire or other disaster. There was also considerable personal property lost, the cost of demolition and added cost to rebuild given the Denver market. Was he under-insured? Perhaps, but I'm not sure police invasion is a rider you can add either.
The police also did 70k worth of damage to the house next door, their insurance didn't pay at all, and the city offered a 2k settlement.

Let's say the house across the street was on fire, and the fire truck was 20 feet short of reaching the fire hydrant in your back yard. Because time is of the essence, and you're not home, they just back the truck through your living room so that it will reach. Firefighter safety and all.
Should you pay for that? Should your insurance company pay for that? Should the people who did the damage pay for that?

That's what we would have done in Chicago. I remember when a guy murdered a policeman in Chicago and the standoff went on for days. We just waited him out. Cut the power. He eventually came out. I wasn't too happy about it but when I see something like this, IMHO we did it the right way. At lot of people were inconvenienced but the home owner got his house back intact.

^^^ Bingo ^^^ I hope the home owner finds a way to appeal and sue the shit out of the city and get his home made rebuilt and paid back his legal expenses. Because that is absolutely ridiculous how they handled it
I'm surprised the homeowner's lawyer couldn't make an eminent domain case. If the state kicks you out of your house for reasons of public safety, then they have taken it for public use and just compensation should be required.
