But did he blouse his boots and have the proper curve in his cap?

Extra points if the holster is an Uncle Mikes nylon sporting holster with strap.

My grandfather, on my dads side, the son of the SS Officer was tacticool in his time. He was a volunteer sheriffs deputy.

Arrived one evening to a break in at a strip mall where according to the story they simply needed extra bodies to keep the place free of bystanders.

A while later they hear gunfire, several shots, he’s yelling, “shots fired” or some equivalent. Turns out he put an end to a mannequin that snuck up on him in the dark.

He was never allowed to assist again, because if the story is accurate as it’s been told to me, the volunteers weren’t supposed to have firearms anyway.

As far as me, was I or am I tacticool? No.

I admit, back in my late teens, when on our property up north I was often ween in cammie pants. Mostly because cargo pants weren't really around yet and I liked the thigh pockets. That is about as far as it went with me and it didn't last once the canvas cargo pants with the zip off legs appeared.

If I'm headed to the range cargo pants or jeans and whatever is comfy. I do have to laugh a bit inside at the guys that show up in $2000 in tactical wear and drag out a beat up POS $200 AK that is held together with duct tape.

I did get in a little trouble at a local range for a 'tacticool' thing I did Big Grin The guy on the bench next to me spent more time cleaning/adjusting/fiddling/being annoying than shooting. I was getting in a little practice before a 100yd match so I needed to focus on a few mechanics. I had a towel with me and draped it over my head to block out his movements. Someone asked why while down range. When I showed up a few weeks later the the range officer jokingly asked me to stop doing shit like that because the next week half the people shooting had towels draped over their heads Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

oops Razz

So the towel heads of Dearborn are moving north in Michigan. YIKES!

Never really about being "cool" or "tacticool"

I have a pair or two of 5.11 pants. We are mandated for out training classes, or range days, to wear pants other than jeans, and you don't want to wear dress pants to the range (mud) or to classes with defensive tactics practice so those make sense. As one of our range instructors, I end up at the range frequently so I have a few pairs.

I have a plate carrier, but I actually use it at work time to time.

Other than that, not much other "tactical" equipment that I'm not issued that isn't carried daily.

I still have the CBs I took with me to Afghanistan and Iraq. And I still use them from time to time. Are they tacticool? Depends. A camo one is a piece of the puzzle. By itself not so much. But a few more pieces added would help it cross the line. And if it is in a non-camo pattern, then I don't see it as tacticool. It is just staying hydrated.

Is it tacticool to use a tan backpack that has MOLLE slots and a couple moral patches?
Am I "tacticool" because it's raining, and I grab my old Gore-Tex parka in NWU or Woodland camo to walk the dog?
Am I tacticool by putting on 5.11s, a Grunt Style Shirt, and a Navy Vet ball cap and starting every business transaction with "do you offer a vet discount?" OK, that is strong Bro-Vet, but is it also tacticool?
I do have a 5.11 messenger bag that I carry my laptop in. Does that make me Tacticool? I did slap on two work safe moral patches? Does that bump it up?

Yes. Big Grin.

I've never been tactical, and probably only cool in my own mind.

I do have a Pelican case of gear in the garage. It's purpose is "emergency use only."

I have plates & carriers for my wife & me, & a few other things I might need to use to get us up to the cabin in a dire situation. I try to prepare for any contingency, but hope we'll never need it.

I'm low-speed, high-drag so all I foresee is getting in the truck & getting out of Dodge, if it ever becomes necessary.

I do have BDU pants (ATACS AU) which I wear up there, but mainly because they're durable & comfortable when managing firewood or maintaining the fences & property. They're not a fashion statement.

Was I ever tactical? No.
Cool? Also no.

I am, however, frequently seen in surplus BDU pants. I buy them cheap at the flea market. Cheap and comfortable. Not worried about how I look to others, at this point in my life.

I still have, and use, A.L.I.C.E. gear.

So no, probably not.

You're aging yourself, I didn't think ALICE gear was cool in the mid to late 70's when I was on active duty in the USMC.

I didn’t think it was cool in the 90’s when I was active duty USMC either. I certainly don’t think it’s cool now but it’s functional and I’m a cheap bastard so I hang onto it. If you are ever hiking in Florida and see a fat dude pouring sweat and bitching about the heat wearing a web belt and canteens in Alice pouches, come say hi. Big Grin

I'll gladly toss you a cold beer!

I still have my ALICE pack and some other (ancient) gear from the days that our favorite Uncle paid me to be "Tacticool"! I have a handful of canteens and canteen cups floating around. I've got a handful of pairs of good combat boots, and other good Merrell / Solomon boots- no, I don't blouse my pants in them.

At work, or when I'm probably going to get dirty, I have my old field jacket & liner. I have a newer gortex parka and microfleece liner. Why? Because they just plain work!

Speaking of liners- you'll pry my poncho liner out of my cold, dead hands! Well, they probably won't be cold Wink. My son stole my original one, I bought 2 or 3. One is in my truck, one is in my camping gear. They come in handy.

I have 2 pair of 5.11 tactical pants for my uniform, they are much more comfortable than our shitty polyester pants! That's for the few times I actually need to be in uniform. Outside of that, it's blue jeans, or tan Vertex cargo pants- they are probably the least "Tacticool" cargo pants out there yet still durable and functional. The Carhart pants are nice too, but those are more "construction-cool".

I wear a bulletproof vest at work, but it's not in a military type carrier.

While I was going through all of the crap that I had to remove from my house in order to rebuild after Hurricane Ida I did come across some of the old Alice Gear including medical kit and mag pouches from my Dirty Boat Guy days. I also found some issued items that, at the time (early 90's), was tacticool; things like Lundhag Mountaineering Boots and Mustang cold water exposure suit. The items that made me laugh the most were the canvas BDU shorts and the silky catch-me-fuck-me shorts many of us used to walk around the compound wearing wool socks folded over the top of jungle boots and t-shirts. The cold, but not freezing version of that was to put on an SBU Hoody and camo Gore-Tex shell as well. Add a pair of Oakley sunglasses and we were high speed low drag yeah... LOL.

So... in conclusion; Yeah... I guess I was tacticool before tacticool was really a thing. I never did wear the stuff after leaving NAVSPECWAR. Although I'd have to say that I probably had kept it with every intention of doing so... Big Grin That would certainly NEVER happen now... not the least because my fat ass wouldn't fit in any of it now. Wink
