While the entire U.S. cheered on Christian Pulisic and company in the exciting defeat of their final Group B opponent, it was the U.S. women’s soccer team that really won big without having to put a cleat on.
The U.S. men’s team is guaranteed a payout of $13 million for making it to the knockout stage of the World Cup, and because the U.S. women’s team struck a historic deal to receive equal pay with the men and split prize money 50/50, they are guaranteed at least $6.5 million.
The prize for the men making it to the round of 16 is more than the women earned for winning the 2015 and 2019 World Cups combined. According to Yahoo Sports, the women's team earned $2 million in 2015 and $4 million in 2019.
The new deal was agreed to in May and will run through 2028. The U.S. Soccer Federation became the first national governing body in sports to guarantee both sexes matching money.
If the U.S. men beat the Netherlands on Saturday, then the payout would be higher for both sides: $2 million higher.

DanHIt doesn't sound great, but do the men get half of what the women earn in the World Cup?

Balzé HalzéAs Matt Walsh said, the women's soccer team is essentially the housewives of the men's team. The least they could do is clean their houses or do their laundry for getting half their money. In this case they did absolutely nothing to get that money.

1s1kAbsolutely ridiculous. The women were offered the exact same deal as the mens team and they turned it down. They wanted other things that the men's World Cup don't get like family leave and healthcare, etc.
The men actually make a living in the free market through their professional league which is where they get their healthcare from.
So now I guess the women get the same thing the men do for just playing World Cup where the men have to play World Cup and professional league.

RightwireWait wait wait... I understand this equal pay for equal work concept. Of course, it completely flies in the face of pay proportionate to success, and return on investment but we'll set that aside for now.
I could understand that if the Men win the world cup, each athlete gets a percentage (say 5% each for easy math) of the team bonus for winning, Thus if the Women were to win their world cup, their percentage of the bonus would be equal (5% each).
How the hell do they get half of what the men won when none of them even played? Are they all married to the men's players?
