I have been using a packet sniffer (WireShark) since W7 to monitor all telemetry coming in and leaving from my personal network. So far I have seen nothing suspicious going to the bad guys at MS (like my personal files, databases, etc.). I have seen diagnostic info going to MS generated by both W7 and W10. I have never had Cortana turned on since I hate voice recognition software. As far as the your posted article I did try to download the suggested "Privacy Dr" link to see what it offered and it set off my Chrome browser malware detector and my Avast anti virus software. My experience with my packet sniffer and AV software detecting a malicious download puts the entire document in question. I would suggest that no one reading this thread attempt the Privacy Dr download, let alone running it once a day as suggested in the article.

On a side note, this article may be of interest to W10 users that are worried about the privacy offered by their OS. I turned off all of that stuff from the day I installed W10 on the advice of my company's IT gurus. That may explain the minimal amount of telemetry I have observed sent to and received from MS on my personal network.

I'm a bit of a Linux "experimenter." I use Windows (10, Server 2012r2, 2016, 2019) and Linux in my daily work, and I'm a Mac user on a personal basis.

I like to download and install different Linux distros (linixii?) just to see how their developers envision the user interface. Of course, Ubuntu and Red Hat/Fedora are probably the most widely known, but there are literally hundreds available! In fact, I have MX Linux running on two machines in my home right now (MX Linux is listed as the top distribution on DistroWatch.com (which I have bookmarked and check frequently).

If you're too timid to take a leap of faith, and you have the hardware to support running a virtual machine (VM) on your existing computer, you can install the free VirtualBox from Oracle Corp.

I replaced the Windows 10 Professional that came on my Lenovo Yoga laptop with MX Linux, and it's been far more stable and usable than the OS that shipped with it!

You can't truly call yourself "peaceful" unless you are capable of great violence. If you're not capable of great violence, you're not peaceful, you're harmless.

I hope it helps. On another side note, if you turn off the "features" in the article, make sure they're still turned off after a major update. I've seen a few of them turned back on. Arghhhhh Mad I like W10 but that's one of the reasons I haven't completely joined in that whole W10 parade.

Windows 7 isn't leaving my building. Wink

I have a Win 10 laptop and have tweaked it so the changes-for-changes-sake nonsense is obviated and it looks/works like it should (i.e. Win7). It is annoying to have to micromanage tweaks, but that's not the deal-killer.

Deal-killer is that the apps I have that do everything I want/need - and that predate the 'subscription model' - don't tend to work on Win10.

So sidegrading/downgrading to Win 10 would cost me a boatload in software subscriptions to get back my current software functionality, even if the OS were free.

So, nope.
