If they were seriously, for real checking you out, you wouldn't know it until the knock on the door.

Damn! That doesn't give you much time to sew the tag back onto the mattress.

spunk639V-Tail if they do knock on your door, make sure you have competent counsel, even if you know you did nothing illegal, sadly you need to protect yourself no answering anything without counsel, if an 1811 thinks your deceptive or lying you can be charged.

Tell me more. Tell me about your experience with the actual statute.
I find online legal advice fascinating. What exactly has to be satisfied to charge this? If I tell a federal agent that I think my 3 cheese sandwich contains mozzarella, Colby and American, and it’s actually mozzarella, Colby jack and American, can I be charged?
Tell me about it.

Where you are the Feds may be upstanding and honest, in Massachusetts not the case as a young LEO was told don’t talk to them. Seen people I know get jammed on obstructing charges by them. Google John Connelly, Morris or Boston FBI Office. If they’re looking at you it’s not good.

Not what I asked.
The statute is the same in Miami, Boston, or Mayberry.
In my little scenario, can I be charged? Why?
You might be figuring out by now that I already know the answer. And that your blanket advice actually isn’t based upon fact, or the actual statute. It’s what the internet repeats constantly. It’s another version of “don’t talk to the police”. Which is fine, but at least when you give such grave, solemn and serious advice, understand that in V-Tails comedic example it doesn’t even apply. Not even in Massachusetts.

kidcopI lied to the feds every time I told them that I was happy to see them and that we were all on the same team. I never got charged.
...except for the Deputy Marshals, they were always a hoot to work with.

It's the same statute that hookers cite when they tell undercovers that they have to tell them that they are the police 'else it's entrapment.

If you tore the label you can always claim it was an accident. If you cut the label it shows clear and convincing nefarious intent and you'd better start saving up for a commissary account and a phone card.

I call dibs on working cases in the district where you can. Not because I particularly want to charge False Cheese Statements, but because that office might be more inclined to charge real crimes too.

There you go. Now don’t lie to a federal agent about it.
