LEO in my area carry Sabre Red. For crowd control they have the mini fire extinguishers CTS, Combined Tactical Systems.

When I got my (Safariland) credentials as an OC Instructor, we used Defense Technologies stream. After getting a healthy dose, we had to move through 5 stations(baton on a bag, knee blocks, elbow blocks, manual defensive tactics, and stage 5)!!! Stage 5 was a person standing about 30 feet away with an object in his/her hand. We had to verbally say "Drop the (item)!" If we said the wrong item, we had to stay there until we identified the correct item.

The whole exercise took about 3-4 minutes. It showed us how long a person can still function under the influence of pepper spray. If you choose a spray or stream, you need to be aware of the wind. If it's blowing in your face, expect to get a taste of the pepper spray! Lots of variables!!!!

Ours was similar. Get sprayed. Locate bad guy and give knee/baton strikes while giving commands. Defend against a few strikes. Draw dummy gun and simulate firing weapon on another bad guy. Radio in location, status, and request for backup.

Only then were you done and could go start decon, which was basically dunking your head in a cattle trough and then sitting in front of a bigass fan and sucking it up for ~45 minutes until the last of the OC dried/wore off.

Used to get sprayed but it’s changed over the past 25yrs, Fox is nasty I carry it daily.
Ohio DOC went to Saber last year. You always get secondary contact when it’s used & youre braking up a fight or doing a cell extraction.
So we’ve gone to an “ incidental/ secondary “ exposure annually.

At my prison they fill a garage stall with it & you go in and spray a target while giving commands to get you breathing it & functioning in a contaminated area. But it tends to be less contact than when it’s used inside during an incident.
There’s just so much used in a prison the annual isn’t even an inconvenience.

I use (have available) the Sabre Red Crossfire Le, stream.

As a LEO, I was a certified OC instructor too. I've used OC twice on suspects that were attempting to assault me and since retiring, I used it twice to "discourage" aggressive javelina which chased after my wife and I as we were walking our dogs in the neighborhood (Gotta love Arizona!). I prefer OC that expels from it's carrier in a heavy "fog" type form, because for the active ingredient to be most effective, it needs to come into direct contact with the attacker's eyes, and the mucus membranes of the nose, throat, and lungs.

I carry an ASP brand "Key Defender" on my key-chain because it's always there, provides sufficient amount of OC for a couple attackers, and can then be used as an impact weapon.

there are basically 3 levels of capsaicinoids (SP), from .5 up to 1.33% solutions. This is an unregulated industry, so any company can basically put anything they want on their label. Many are mixed in a garage lab and the strength varies from can to can. I have observed this many times training LE. Also, for some canisters, you have to shake them before deployment, otherwise you get less product and more propellant coming out, which is not good. Many times I had an agency swear that theirs was the hottest, only to find out a new shipment was nearly ineffective. Sabre is by far the best and most reliable of the brands, they have a lab onsite and test each batch that goes out. CTS is a close second, but if you are not LE, you can't get it. Safariland is fine, Fox is down on my list. To me, it doesn't matter the concentration, I'm a wimp and don't want even the lowest concentration of spray.

That part doesn't matter. The human body can't physically distinguish a difference past ~1-2 million Scoville units. So don't let that sway you.

My dept used to spray the old stuff onto the ground and then trash the cans. It relieves the pressure from the can and then is recycled or buried.

I have one that is 10 years old. I am going to spray it outside and see if it works still. Also would be good to let omeone shoot it to get and idea how to aim and fire it. I'm to practical to just throw it away.

I had a 10 year old can of Sabre red in the car when I was at their factory. They tested it right in front of me - 98% of the original heat level still!
