College students angry & offended by survey designed to determine what language they find offensive.
It's not 100% clear in the online version but the TV story noted clearly that the survey included a variety of statements taken from social media, some were in fact racist. Students were to rate how stereotypical, humorous, or offensive (among other things) each statement was to them personally.

Apparently some of the students found several of the statements racist, deemed the study racist, and demand action! Now the instructor, participating in a larger study is under University and Police investigation for racism.

On top of that, US Customs & Border Protection was on campus to present to a class and that also caused students to be seriously offended.

I guess everyone just has to be offended by something.

EAST LANSING, Mich. - A survey sent out by a Michigan State University professor sparked outrage because it contained racist and offensive statements.

The survey was part of a study to see how students react to racist online speech.

Professor Saleem Alhabash posted the survey Monday. It asked students to rate statements based on how stereotypical, funny or offensive they were. The survey contained racial slurs.

"The survey was very offensive," Jimiela Weatherly said. "It said, 'I date black women because I don't want to meet a father.' So for them to make the assumptions that all black females don't have a father, that's very disrespectful."

Alhabash apologized for the survey.

"The intent was to uncover these messages, and shed the light that these messages do unfortunately exist in the real world," Alhabash said.

Many students didn't understand the intent of the survey.

President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. released a statement:

"Our community has been affected in the past several days by incidents causing concern and anger.

"I, too, am concerned, because a safe, inclusive and respectful campus is my top priority. Hate has no home at Michigan State. We want every individual to feel welcomed, valued and heard.

"Recently the greater campus community has experienced vandalism at MSU Hillel, our center for Jewish student life; the presence of U.S. Customs and Border Protection on campus last week for a presentation to a class; an instance of racial bias reported from Bryan Hall over the weekend; and a survey in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences that offended students.

Education usually requires some exposure to a measure of repugnant stuff.

Intellectual evaluation often involves some challenge to one's internal status quo.

Lacking tolerance for mere exposure to any offensive thought offends the very concept of education.

You just identified why college is so difficult for our latest crop of whiners.
Next, they will be wanting to repeal the law of gravity because it’s always holding them down.

The university president should consider something else for a “top priority.”

A study to see how “students react to racist online speech?!?” Well, I guess he knows now

I'm reading a just-published novel called Campusland,by Scott Johnston, and I highly recommend it if you want to know what things are like on campus these days. I just retired from college teaching, so I already well knew. But this book hits the nail on the head, and is well-written in the style of Tom Wolfe.

"I'm offended" is the battle cry of the snowflakes.

It sounds like the professors survey was successful Big Grin He wanted to see what language was found to be offensive and hit the mark dead center. The funny thing is, it doesn’t sound at all like he was being racist but gauging responses to “offensive” language. The outrage trained barking seal students did as expected... missed the point entirely haha!

They probably "didn't understand what the survey was for" because they didn't read the thing before they started.

Shocker.

So, uh, they were offended by test statements in a survey that was designed, in part, to determine how offensive certain statements were?

And these are college/university students?

I think that meteor is overdue.

Funny thing is that the Sparties are protesting a professor who is a "person of color" as they would put it. Prof al-Habashi is a Lebanese Arab, and the Sparties ought to be apologising to him, since, he is not only a POC, he is an Arab, and a muslim!!!! Smile Prof al-Habashy is a triple victim, according to woke culture!!!!! SmileSmile

This just goes to show who the various schools acknowledge who is actually in charge- the students that are paying exorbitant fees to come have their belief structure reinforced. The students get a mostly worthless degree in sociology-somethingorother, and the schools gets revenue. The number of schools that teach gets shorter every day.

At a guess. They have no idea and are not curious enough to try to find out.

When I ponder the difference between these "colleges" today and those I studied in to get my 2 BS degrees, and MBA I have to wonder how so much damage was done to our educational(?) system in such a short time.

They're been indoctrinated that everything is 'racist' (words, math). Good job liberal education.

Yup. ISTM the survey, being as it caused such a ruckus, was spot-on.

What the prof should have done was point out to these dim bulbs the irony of their protestations. Maybe they'd actually have gained some actual, you know, education in the process.

There's nothing even remotely liberal about education today. It's the diametric opposite of liberal.

I really wish people would stop referring to these leftists and their indoctrination as "liberal." Not only is it wholly inaccurate, but it gives what they're doing cover, whereas what is really needed is exposure for what it is.
