I believe in the principle of Due Process |
“The public, more often than not, will forgive mistakes, but it will not forgive trying to wiggle out of one.” — Lewis Grizzard Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me. When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson "Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

What a great humorist. I miss him and his writings. Sort of a modern Mark Twain. I loved Lewis Grizzard. I'm sure a lot of the younger ones don't know him and never heard of him, but I used to love getting the newspaper and reading his column, back in those old, old days when we got a regular newspaper. He had some good ones!

Lewis didn’t hunt. Never took part of the southern male tradition. But finally, after years of urging, he agreed to spend a weekend with some friends at camp, just for the drinking and such. They picked him up at an ungodly hour and set off. About 6:00 AM they stopped at a crowded country diner for breakfast. Seated, the waitress stood by with her order pad, tapping her pencil: “What ya’ll want?” “Two over light and bacon” said the first “Scrambled with sausage” said another “Pancakes” said the third “What about you, sir?” she asked Lew, who was still scanning the one-page menu “Do you have egg whites?’ “No, no egg whites” “Turkey sausage?” “Naw, just pork” “Rye toast?” “Nope, white toast and biscuits”” Sigh. “OK, I’ll have two poached eggs and a bowl of grits. Dry light toast. But I don’t want the grits scraped off the side of the hot container. I want them dipped from the middle” In about 10 minutes, she brought the three friends plates and left. After a while, Lew flagged her down and asked about his breakfast. “I told the cook what you wanted. He said he just didn’t have time to fuck with you”

Not to divert the thread but a couple of months ago I picked up a newspaper, which I have not done in a long time, and was scanning the ed page for the Art Buchwald column. Talk about old habits...
