First trip lakeside. And what recovery strap? Login/Join

First trip lakeside. A little sandy but no problems. It was fun!! To go where I've never been before. Smile

I exercised the 4L and CDL a little bit as well. CDL - I was trying to engage it will stopped and in neutral. Was having a hard time and then checked the manual. Apparently, I can/should engage CDL while moving (< 60mph). After that, CDL engage and disengaged easily w/out issue. The "!" warning light comes on (VSC is disabled) - this is normal and expected, right?

I'm being careful -- not going anywhere unless I see other vehicles with similar capability (unlifted, non-M/T or even A/T tires).

Still, I want to prepare. I bought a Rhino recovery hitch. Any recommendations on strap? I'm looking at these two:

Rhino: https://www.amazon.com/gp/prod...1&smid=AJ3T3IHU5XRWT

ARB: https://www.amazon.com/gp/prod...1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

My hitch shackle: https://www.amazon.com/gp/prod...01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Surprisingly, it came without a pin. I'm looking at a Curt pin. Any other recommendations - something more heavy duty?

Unless you bury that car all the way up to the roof in sand (and probably not even then), all of those straps and hooks will be more than enough. You'll rip the hitch off the car before you break anything you have linked.

We use very similar sized recovery straps in our work trucks. 14,000 pounds empty, often loaded with safes or pulling trailers with safes on them. I have yet to break one.

Cheaper Rhino it is then. Smile

Now, 20' or 30'. I'm guessing there is a reason they make two different lengths but it eludes me right now.

Either of those straps should be good. And you're probably good with any pin rated for a hitch, although you may want to consider a locking one if security is an issue.

Other items -

* Shovel
* Hi-Lift Jack - not shorter than 48"; maybe a base for it (for soft sand), or a piece of 2x12
* Hi Lift Lift-Mate (https://www.amazon.com/Hi-Lift-LM100-Jack-LM-100-Lift-Mate/dp/B00042KGWG)

You may be able to find or fab some sort of bracket to attach the shovel and Hi-Lift to your roof rack.

I have many more ideas, but budget may preclude them....

I would go with the 30 footer. That gives you the most length should you need the distance, and can always be doubled to reduce the length to 15 foot should the length be too long for some reason.

Better to have and not need when it comes to recovery gear.

Instead of a winch...one of these days I will grab one, I carry one of these.

I bought one when it was half the price of the one in the link, very good kit!! Also have a couple pulleys and tree straps in the kit.

https://www.amazon.com/Ratchet...eywords=wyeth+puller

And a 3 ton bottle jack with this kit.

https://safejacks.com/products...-without-bottle-jack

Nice for lifted trucks.

I carry a couple of recovery straps but the one I have used is the ARB 30'...it worked well for my xterra...

https://www.amazon.com/ARB-ARB...ywords=kinetic+strap

Make sure you use frame mount recovery points and pick up a couple good shackles.

People make a lot of noise about the brand of items but it usually doesn't make a difference.
Some companies spend a lot of money on advertising but it doesn't make their product any better. With straps, its good to examine the stitching and compare against others. Thats often impossible except at large 4wd events. Shops often only carry one, and their sales staff will tell you theirs is the best. Believe them at your peril.

My opinion is thinner straps give you a little more slingshot effect than really thick ones. For most pulls, it just doesn't matter.

A few years ago we went to the All 4 Fun in Colorado. Behind us was a girl we'd met before from Virginia Beach. She drove up a rock just fine by one of her friends Behind her got stuck. They were all screaming for a tow strap. I have no idea why none of them had one. My son was right in front of me and handed her a tiny little rope. It was the end of my winch line we'd cut off because it was too long. The girl looked at it like it was a snake. But they hooked it up and it worked just fine. If its good enough for a 10,500# winch, it'll hold up to a minor pull up a rock.

Most pulls aren't for a dead vehicle its only to help the other guy along. You don't need the biggest and baddest stuff.

I've strapped out several folks over the last 12 years. Currently I have this one in my Wrangler;

I did need to get strapped out once, luckily I had a strap and the first vehicle along pulled me out, took 10 minutes.

I suspect you'll have some sort of factory tow point on the front, but if not here's a good option.

I'd look at a set of MaxTrax if you spend a lot of time around sand.

I like the Bolt locking receiver pin. Plenty heavy duty, and it adjusts itself to your key the first time you insert it, so you don't need to carry extra keys. Your ignition key opens the lock. Get the right one for your brand of vehicle, about $25 at Amazon. I got mine after seeing it mentioned here in another thread, because I keep a receiver cover on all the time that might be tempting to steal.

Here it is at a more reasonable price:
http://www.treestuff.com/store/catalog.asp?item=1856

I have one to use when pulling over trees or to straighten up-rooted trees. It is very well built and easy to use. The synthetic line is easier and safer to use than wire rope.

It is also good to have a way to re-inflate your tires because you should be airing down your tires to travel on sand. Don't forget an air pressure gauge as well.

It was ~$300 when I bought mine, I also have a $50 4 ton cable puller, the difference in quality is evident and one reason it is more expensive is the rope....not cheap.

I read plenty of reviews of the Wyeth-Scott and it is a once in a lifetime purchase.

At $700+ not so much

Getting the Intercomp gauge. Would get a compressor but have to get a larger size. But wondering if I can actually air down with practical benefit. I thought I read that 285/50/20 doesn't really allow for air down (say, down to 20-25psi)

I was leaning toward the ARB again since the Rhino is not kinetic. But then I started reading about how dangerous they could be. Now I can't decide.
