I bought some Mason bees for my blueberries this year. Bees increase the size and number of blueberries by about 50 percent. Mason bees out pollinate honey bees by a factor of about 100 to 1. I need to build a house for the Mason bee tubes. I got the Mason bee cocoons, tubes and paper inserts from Brushy Mountain Bee Farm In NC. http://www.brushymountainbeefarm.com/ 41 41

I saw one on a plant here in northern Kentucky and they are small. I never knew this. Pretty little creatures.

Nature is full of magnificent creatures |
Do the Mason bees overwinter? Last year I noticed we had some smaller bees which were not honeybees. The echinacea and baikal skullcap attract several types of bees and hummingbirds.

Sounds like an awesome karma! You know, the honey not the BEES - ouch! ...let him who has no sword sell his robe and buy one. Luke 22:35-36 NAV "Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves." Matthew 10:16 NASV

The Mason bees lay eggs in a cocoon in the tubes and seal it with mud. The next year as the temperatures warm above 50 degrees, the male emerges from the cocoon first. The male cocoon is smaller than the female cocoon. The bees mate and eggs are laid in the tubes or holes that are 5/16 inches in diameter. At the end of the year, you can collect the cocoons and store them in the frig for next year. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8vAQ1B5Zj4&t=15s There are lots of videos on utube on Mason bees. 41 41

https://www.youtube.com/watch?...aVw&feature=youtu.be Pollinating highbush blueberries: bees bring bigger berries Pollination is an important aspect of highbush blueberry production, and is essential for high yields. This talk will review how blueberries are pollinated by bees, how some cultivars are more sensitive than others to pollination by bees, and how different types of bees can be used for pollination of this crop. Results from four regions of North America will be contrasted showing the relative roles of honey bees, wild bees, and alternative managed pollinators. https://learn.extension.org/events/2925 This is one of the series put out by the Cooperative Extension System which involves some of our colleges doing research in different agriculture fields. Congratulations on this fine recovery. I have only two hives left and I am hoping I can capture one or more to build back what the county destroyed. This is probably feudal because the count has announced they will start the spraying up again.

Just curious if you've been in contact with your state ag department about this? Around these parts they are VERY protective of bee colonies, even allowing the shooting of bear in or out of season if you think they are threatening your hives. We don't have zika to be concerned with up in these parts (yet), but I bet if they were thinking of spraying for it and enough of us lobbied them, something would happen. If you haven't, you might try to organize some other folks and pitch a bitch. ________________________________________________________ "Great danger lies in the notion that we can reason with evil." I only took it to county extension service that works out of the university of Georgia and the people in charge of spraying. The previous agent retired and was a Bee keeper.Great guy. The new islander transplant is an asshole with an attitude.British attitude, overly educated and looking down his nose at us commoners Their response was that they would not spray in front of my home. I kinda live in a circle.

With my hands! I had about 5 minutes to get5 them in a box before they decide they aren't safe under the birdbath and fly away. Or take up residence in an opening in the house! He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster.

Question: those aprons these mason bees wear don't interfere with their flying? "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual."
