"Give yourself a treat, get your ass in the seat." Haha.

When I have time, I sometimes like to get my shoes shined. It's usually a nice experience and a treat. Almost like a shave at a barber shop.

When I worked in "The City" as locals call NYC, my office was on the opposite corner from where this gent set up shop, in Rock Center where Fox News is these days. Every Friday on my daily 13 block walk up from Penn Station, I would stop at a shoe shine place and treat myself to a shine. It was a relaxing highlight to the end of a long work week. A good shoe shine is getting harder and harder to come by these days.

When I used to work downtown in NYC, I used to take advantage of a guy like this who used to shine shoes. He did a terrific job on them, and his stories were priceless. I also had a favorite, retired NYPD, hot dog vendor that I'd specifically ask for Ketchup on my dogs from just to hear him howl. Smile

Think of it as a cheap, quick foot massage. If you're going in to a buisness meeting or something, it can be a pretty good way to help put your head in the right space.

I had a co-worker tell me about airport show shines years ago. It had never occurred to me to have my shoes shined. Now, whenever I travel for business (rarely) I usually stop and get my shoes shined.

Also goes to show you can make money at almost anything...as long as you're good at it.

You'd be surprised (maybe) at how a good shoe shine (read spit-shine) will get you. Depending on your job, it makes you look squared away!

He has a good gig going. I doubt he takes credit cards, only cash. I also doubt he reports much if any of his income so doesn't even pay into SS. Health insurance would be covered by others who pay in to SS, in the form of Medicaid. Of course I could be completely wrong.....
Love his work ethic and technique though.

If he is averaging $10 a shine, he is working his butt off to make $900. God bless him.

$10 a shine would be low. But I'm sure he's working his butt off. Most successful people do.

Let's do some math. 10 hours (max). $900 (bragged). That's $90 per hour. Now, in that hour, he has to both market (verbal harangue) and shine. Let's be generous and give him 30 minutes working time per hour. In that 30 minutes, he has to process $90 inflow. Ten shines in 30 minutes is 3 minutes per shine. In my airport shines, it is at least double that duration. If someone pays him $10 for 3 minutes work, I would be surprised. If he works ten hours a day, I would be surprised.

$900 a day would work out to $225K per year.

I'm glad he is successful and happy, but there is no way he makes $900 per day.
