I am looking for free public rifle/handgun ranges. Something within a reasonable driving distance from the Chicago suburbs. 200 yards or more is preferred. What can you come up with?

I’m in the western suburbs. That’s a 2.5 hour drive and close enough to free for me. Thanks.
I’ll take all the info I can get.

Is there free shooting on public land near Lakeville, IN? Or duck hunting?

Free near Chicago may be hard to come by. Most public areas one can hunt on prohibit target shooting.

Here’s one, varied ranges. It’s about 30 minutes North of Lake Geneva, WI. After a shoot, lock the guns up then find a favorite restaurant.

I would look for an Izaak Walton Club in your area. Looks like Chicago has lots to offer:

I have an app on my age-old iPhone entitled "Where to Shoot". It will segregate by indoor versus outdoor and pulls up both public and private ranges.

For example, near me there are 15 locations. if you click on one, it will provide the name, phone number, and website address.

Public is going to be hard (if not impossible)to find around here! Remember, we're in a very Commie section of a somewhat Commie state.

Where? North, West or South?

Aurora Sportsman Club out west. Private, and $!
The Site, north west corner of the state, private, mostly a training center.

Willow Slough, Indiana. Probably 90min south of Chicago, just across the border. (IIRC- only a 100yd range for rifle)

Buffalo Range out by Ottawa Il was always pretty good.

I really can't think of anything else that's outdoor. Everything around Chicago is pretty much indoor. Unless you just come into the City. Right now, Chicago seems to be the worlds largest outdoor range. Just a word of warning- as BBMW pointed out, you'll probably get return fire Wink
