Straight from Apple yea I know but I am looking forward one of a little older vintage than they offer.
Looking at a 2020-2022 M1 or M2 chip. Amazon and eBay both have some with 1 year warranty.
Any better places to go?

Was hoping someone around here had one they were wanting to let go but no such luck.

Just curious why? I have an M1 (MBP) and it's running fine, even with latest MacOS and only 8GB of RAM. More than suits my needs. But a new Air M4 is on sale at costco for $800-1000 (13" / 15") with 16GB and 512GB - pretty reasonable considering I paid $1200 ($1400?) for the M1.

I got my first one from Apple that lasted about 14 years. My second I bought gently used right here.

If you don't want to buy a newer one from Apple, I think I'd trust Amazon a little more than eBay, but that's just me. Woot sometimes has MacBook sales, but I don't think I'd buy there, even though they are part of Amazon. But I don't recall seeing refurbs specifically.

Why? Because M1 refurbs are under $400. I don’t feel like spending more than that for my needs.

For many years OWC (OtherWorld Computing) AKA MacSales has offered used/refurbished Macs and accessories. Perhaps not the cheapest, but the stuff I have bought from them has been first rate.

I just picked up two used iPad Pros on Amazon for my boys for a great price. The one would not take a charge, but Amazon quickly replaced it for me and they’ve both been pretty solid so far.

I am a fan of the Apple Refurb program, but yes, they are mostly newer models.

After reviewing all your suggestions and Back Market.
I ended up going with a refurbished from EBay. The company has great feedback and a lot of feedback.
Got an M1 with 16gb of RAM and 256gb SSD in what they consider Very Good condition for $479.
With a 1 year warranty through Allstate.

The others were over $500 with 16gb of RAM and like $379 for 8gb.
I figure for $100 the 16gb was the way to go. I have another insurance policy through Allstate and they have been super easy to deal with. Hoping I don’t need to use it but figure having a good experience with them in the past was a good idea.

I also purchased with PayPal using my Credit Union Card so they will likely be helpful if anything were to go side ways.

Woot.com. They aren't always on there but they are a deal when they are.

Got my Ebay MacBook today. Couple minor scratches on the case but small thin no gouges or anything. Screen looks brand new and the battery health thing says battery is normal and 100% from new.

Never had a Mac laptop so need to get used to this pad thing. I'll probably end up getting a mouse.

Not used anything but an iPhone or iPad Apple wise so a lot to get used to with the OS.

It has OS Ventura on it. Should I upgrade the OS or just leave it alone?

Go for the latest (most current) version that your model will support. Unlike MicroSoft, Apple OS updates are free.

I upgraded my wife's Macbook with the latest and greatest. First thing she did was ask for a wireless mouse and she figured out on her own how to disable the touch pad when no mouse was attached. You're going to to love the "iXxxx" integration thing. Pretty slick device. My only complaint, being a ThinkPad and MS Surface guy, is no touch screen. I use that a lot on both of my lap tops. My complaint wasn't even on my wife's "Apple needs to change this" list so I seriously doubt that will be an issue for you. Enjoy your new laptop!

Check out the offerings on “Woot!”. . .

https://www.woot.com/

. . .in case they list models that Amazon does not.
