something for farm and trail use. What would you consider?

hudrI am 54 and have been riding motorcycles (dirt and street) since I was about 8 or 9.
Currently I have a Honda CRF150 that I toodle around the place on. I can't carry much on it, so if it comes to putting out cubes or doctoring a cow I have to use the truck or the tractor. But for just checking on things and in general FUN, it is great.
I have outgrown serious trail riding, but still get it down around the couple of creek bottoms I have on the place and check on cows and neighbors with it.
Mine is a 2015 model (I think). I bought it new and have had zero problems with it.
However, with the grandkids getting older, I think a SxS may be in the not too distant future.

ugeestaFind an old Honda Rancher atv. Those things are indestructible. If it went swimming and sunk to the bottom though, pass on it.

hrcjonI'm a motorcycle guy so no help on the ATV. But I've been around enough dealerships to say get a honda or a yamaha if you are getting an ATV. I had a Yamaha Kodiak for 10years and its was great but I doubt you will find a decent example for 2500.
On motorcycles do you really mean dual sport? i.e able to be legally licensed for the road, that's the normal meaning.
on my farm I have a few choices but I mostly use a yamaha ttr125Lfor just buzzing around. But a honda crf125F is pretty much the same thing. you should be able to find those used for 2500 in good shape.

old rugged crossThanks guys. Good info. Been keeping an eye out for a later model TW200 Yamaha. But the ones I have been seeing are a bit out of my budget.
A Rokon, honda fat cat or Polaris big wheel would be awesome. But there were not lots of them made and not for many years now.

Oscar ZuluA TW 200 is what you want, I bought mine (2009) in 2015 for 2500. But the old ones now are almost as much as the new ones. Anything after the inaugural year of 1987 is a good machine.
Good luck!

mrvmaxI’d say the TW also, ATV’s are a pain to work on due to all the body work. My Polaris is much easier to work on but the price is way over your budget. I have always read good things about the TW’s.

P250UA5Always thought the TW would be a fun scoot. Wouldn't be fun to move a deer with, but would make a nice little ranch moto.

YellowJacketI have had been riding a Yama 250 Big Bear for 25 years now and it is one of the most bulletproof little ATVs I can imagine.
I can not imagine doing the things I need to do around the farm on a motorcycle.

The Big bear is a great atv. I would need a 4wd. And finding one is good condition in my price range is a tough find.

egregoreBoth can be fun, but an ATV can actually carry stuff. But can you find either for $2500 these days?

ridewvI can't imagine a motorcycle being much benefit on farm property but small ones can be fun for trail riding if that's what you want.
An ATV can carry things like shovel, tools, chain saw, bags of feed, pull a trailer, pull a downed tree off a trail, and go up gnarly rutted trails, through streams, and places that even good motorcycle riders cannot. Plus they can be fun. I can't imagine owning rural property without having a SXS or ATV.
Being on a budget I would cast a wide net looking at used Japanese brands for one in the nicest condition you can find.
No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

phydoughAn old Honda Trail 90 or Trail 110. Little trail goats with their high-low range secondary gear box, 4 speed auto clutch transmission and a nice big rear cargo rack make for an ideal farm bike.

Creeping_DeathI recently went through the utility vehicle purchasing process. I started looking for something to just push snow with, and a quad with plow struck my fancy. I had found a couple specimens that were 2004 and 2014 models, both over 5000 miles, with plows for around $3500 and $5000. For that price, I wasn’t too far off from a full side by side.
That opened a whole other can of worms though and ultimately I opened the wallet a bit further to score a 2023 Teryx 4S with under 2k miles that the family could enjoy year-round. I had a plow added to check the snow-mover box, and ultimately I am glad to have spent a bit more money than originally intended to get a vehicle we can use for work and fun around our place.
