Finally ‘Retired’
I have absolutely detested my job and the company where I’ve been working for the past 2-1/2 years. I finally had enough. Friday was my last day.

Will take a few weeks off and start looking for another job.

Congrats. What kind of new job are you hoping for?

I would be happy driving a cab. But seriously I will be looking for another engineering job - doing what I don’t know at this point.

I liked my job but the company that bought us is working to hone its leading edge mediocrity and it was like beating my head against a wall. So since I couldn’t convince them to do things right, I really didn’t have a choice.

I actually hope they fail badly.

When you have feelings like that toward the company you work for it's past time to leave. Congrats on getting out of that mindbender job. Good luck in your upcoming search.

Congrats, Greg...in the short term. Long term if you decide to make it permanent!

What kind of engineering? You only down for local opportunities?

Waay back when, my first career was as an engineer in the defense industry. I absolutely hated the mediocrity.

Engineers want to find a really good solution to the problem. In school we strive for A grades. We want to optimize and streamline.

Then out in the defense industry all they wanted was D- level work. It couldn't be a failure, but D- was good enough. Beyond that, the definition of pass was "meets the spec". It didn't have to actually work, it just had to be said it met the spec.

I hear you, nhtag, that there needs to be a sense of accomplishment. Good luck with your job search!

Congrats. I'm kinda the same way but was part of a layoff. Don't wish them ill but it was time to move on anyway. This just helped me move on.

I'm considering myself semi retired as I likely wont go back into the old industry. Not getting those paychecks will be an adjustment.

With your background and the growth in AZ, seems you would not have any problem finding work. Good PE’s are a rare breed.
At least in the field of energy management, they are.
The working world isn’t what it used to be anywhere.
Being addicted to mediocrity isn’t a virtue…

How about a teaching position at a college. We need more trained people and even need better people to train them.

My engineer friend retired to part time. He contracts with firms, mentoring new engineers they have hired. Two or three days a week, and he feels as if he can instill some of his work ethic in the younger kids.
