The oldest son of the late Cuban dictator Fidel Castro committed suicide at the age of 68, Cuban state media announced on Thursday.

Fidel “Fidelito” Castro Diaz-Balart is the oldest son of Castro and his first wife, Mirta Diaz Balart.

Diaz-Balart was said to have killed himself Thursday morning after receiving months of treatment for a "deeply depressed state," according to official website Cubadebate. He reportedly "required a hospitalization regime then outpatient follow-up" as part of his treatment.

Fidel Castro died in November 2016 at age 90. His brother, Raul, took over as Cuba's leader in 2008.

Before his death, Diaz-Balart was a scientific adviser to the Council of State and was the vice president of the Cuban Academy of Sciences.

Of all Castro's offspring, only Diaz-Balart, the angel-faced, blond boy from revolution-era photographs, was publically recognized. He bore a striking resemblance to his father, which earned him the nickname Fidelito, or Little Fidel.

Diaz-Balart was born in 1949 and brought to the United States in the 1950s after his parents divorced. His mother's family had ties to the Batista government, which Castro would eventually overthrow. As a result, the former Cuban leader wanted his son kept from his ex-wife's family, leading to an ongoing custody battle over the boy.

"I refuse even to think that my son may sleep a single night under the same roof sheltering my most repulsive enemies and receive on his innocent cheeks the kisses of those miserable Judases," Castro wrote to his half-sister Lidia in 1956.

While Castro was in Mexico preparing for the guerrilla war, he convinced his ex-wife to send Fidelito to visit him for two weeks. Once the boy was there however, Castro refused to send him back. Later, while the boy was out for a walk with Castro's sisters, three armed men in a car grabbed Diaz-Balart so he could be reunited with his mother.

As an adult Diaz-Balart rose to the top post at Cuba's Atomic Energy Commission before his father removed him for unpublicized reasons in the early 1990s.

Maybe the drugs he was taking caused the suicide.

The drugs they give bipolar people can cause suicide if not taken off gradually.

I had a nephew that broke down on I81 when he was going to see his grandparents in Covington. A State Trooper picked him up and dropped him off at the exit in the middle of no where. He walked down to the river and fell in and drowned. The Trooper should have called his mother or taken him to a pay phone or gas station.

After some run around, the Trooper was fired.

Could be drugs. Could be political. I assume it was the latter.

My condolences. I'm going shooting w/ 2 of my nephews tomorrow.
But I'm curious how a Trooper is supposed to diagnose an adult male when his car breaks down. To the point he's supposed to make him call his mom or not let him go his own way.
Maybe there is more to the story for this space.

There is not more to the story. If someone breaks down whether a Trooper or an individual, you help them find help. Being bipolar had nothing to do with it. How do you find help in the middle of no where?? It is not even safe to walk along the road in that area. Someone was not thinking. He forgot to take his cellphone with him.

It took them over three days to find the vehicle since another Trooper had it towed and failed to file a report. They were lucky they weren't sued.

Over 200 people came to the funeral since he was only 26 and was well known in high school.

Right now I'm off out to collect Mrs tac from the local supermarket, where they are doing a special on Mexican fixings. Anyone here recommend me a good salsa concoction for a few people who are not Mexican food-savvy?

That's about as much Spanish-speaking connection I can raise today.

Not if they don’t want help. See it all the time get called to folks that other folks think need assistance. I get there they want no assistance can’t force assistance upon them if they aren’t doing anything unlawful.

Too bad the rest of the ilk didn't do the same. They are all evil.

Seems more likely that someone(s) helped speed him on his way to be with his father in a place that's just a little hotter than Cuba. Whether it was to work towards breaking the Castro "dynasty" or any number of other reasons possible assistants had, I'll bet a bottle of Cuban rum that he had help regardless.
