Thanks, we’re at least considering it. I like a thermal carafe, and the price on that model is also very good.

I have looked over them at the store.
They seem very cheap on the plastic.
The drip tube is a major complaint and multiple folks say grounds not evenly wet.
Anyone with real experience?
I want to like it, but seems similar to emperors new clothes as I read on Amazon.
The sale price is fantastic however and a better price point!

I have a friend in Germany with one. I spent a night at her house and had a few cups. They were good. That's all I got. I've been wanting one, but can't bring myself to spend the money when my $40 Presto percolator already makes such great coffee.

I bought one for my Dad 10 years ago and was so impressed bought one for myself soon after. Grounds are evenly wet, no plastic component failures, etc. Dad has the 8-cup thermal carafe version and I have the 10-cup thermal carafe version.

Consistency of temperature, dwell time, and even wetting is a reason why they are the longest standing possessor of being a SCA certified home brewer.

Also, curious how you arrived at your Amazon review concern? From the OP's link 83% are 5 star and 8% are 4 star. I clicked on the reviewer who titled her review "Emporer's new clothes" and her other 11 reviews don't make her sound very bright and has other reviews rating a product low because the product arrived damaged.

Glad to see I am not the only philistine. I went and looked, but wondered could it really be that much better than the Mr. Coffee I already have?

I bought Dad's for father's Day in 2010, and we did a head to head comparison with his old Mr. Coffee (don't worry he ran vinegar through it regularly so it was in good working order) versus the Technivorm. Due to the higher brew temperature, optimal dwell time, and even wetting the Technivorm got more flavor out of the exact same coffee.

Good to know. Mrs. slosig is always bugging me for a Christmas list and there really isn’t anything that comes to mind. You may have just helped me out with SWMBO. Wink

My Moccamaster is the only thing I ever bought after a SigForum recommendation that I use every day; and only need one of. I bought mine on an open box sale.

What I did for my Dad was buy him the Technivorm for Father's Day and followed that up at Christmas with a Baratza Virtuoso conical burr grinder. In other words, if you don't have a good coffee grinder you could follow-up your Christmas gift with a birthday gift of a good conical burr grinder.

We have one at each home - both are 10 cup glass carafe without the manual switch on the filter cone. Stupid expensive, but the machine makes great coffee and is dirt simple. Highly recommended.

I have 2 Technivorms.

Because they're worth it.

Good stuff isn't cheap. Cheap stuff isn't good.

Buy one.

Having said that, I bought a OXO Brew Single Serve Pour Over

I'm trying to cut back to 1 cup of really good coffee in the morning and didn't want to waste a half pot to a full pot of really good coffee beans and grinds. This OXO is amazing. It consists of 3 pieces and the one you pour in the hot water has a good number of small holes which directs the water into different areas of the ground (same general idea as the Technivorm spray arm). It fits and sits well on any mug I own.

If I do my job right, which is to put the right amount of coffee grinds in the filter basket and make sure I have the water hot at the correct temp, (another plug for a Thermapen to ensure the hot water is between 195-205 degrees) this simple thing will dispense the hot water at the correct rate of time it will deliver to me an excellent cup of coffee. Really good coffee.

In fact, since I really like the first OXO, I just ordered a second one last week for $12.79, today it's $15.99.

I highly recommend you spend the few dollars and buy one.

Edit to add: Technivorm 5 year warranty. Every part is available, they answer the phone and will send to you. Or you can order the part on their website. Technivorms are built for the long haul. They can be sent back to Technivorm and they will fix or overhaul to new condition. It can be considered a once in a lifetime buy, your kids will inherit it. They are NOT throwaway items. I inadvertently broke a filter basket just before Christmas a few years ago and when I called they sent me another one free of charge. When I asked why it was free the phone rep just said Merry Christmas. I've never forgotten that. However, expect to pay for parts, if you ever manage to need one, they are not expensive.

We like our coffee here, a lot. But we like it ready and waiting when we wake up and that has always been an obstacle to buying one of these, and the price. My brother and his wife have one. We recently spent almost a week at their home while they were away. We brought our own beans and used them in their Moccamaster, the same beans we use in our home coffee maker. It was seriously like we were drinking a totally different brand of coffee. The difference in taste and smoothness is nothing less than remarkable. It might be voodoo....but it's there.

Have had one for 5 years. Love it. Anyone who appreciates good coffee should get one.

Not debating all the critics, but for the post about wanting it ready on wake up, please. Brew time on these is right at 7 minutes. Prep the night before and press switch on way to bathroom, maybe kill an extra 5 minutes. Your coffee will be better.

Check out the stories about repairs too. These aren’t disposable like we’ve all gotten used to in appliances. Problem, they’ll ship part or fix it.

Also these have half-pot settings. Flip to that and water still heats to optimum temp, but meters flow to extend brew time to nearly full duration. If you don’t know why brew/saturation time matters, you will after you have one of these!

Thanks OP. Needed one for cabin, ordered

Moccamaster fanboi checking in. I have two (2).

The large one with thermal carafe I used during my naval career, both onboard ship and during shore duty. It was a workhorse. Got the kind of use you might imagine in an office and aboard a ship. The Moccamaster never failed and still works good as new. Thing is, I don't need to make that much coffee everyday now that I'm retired. So for the last few years, I've used a Moccamaster Cup-one and it's been just as flawless as its big brother. The larger carafe size one now lives in retirement too for the time being, beneath my kitchen sink.

The Cup-one accepts standard No. 2 cone filters. The amazing thing I discovered about the Cup-one is that it makes just as amazing cup of tea as it does a cup of coffee. In fact, it makes a cup of tea I seldom produce otherwise even with teapot, infuser, timer and all the other tea accoutrements. I use a No. 2 filter for loose tea and tea, if bagged, I place directly into the cone filter housing. Perfect cup of tea or coffee every time.

But nobody likes coffee tasting tea or tea tasting coffee, so I thoroughly clean the cone filter housing after each use. Used to be tedious to get down into all the corners of the cone filter housing. What I did to make life much easier was modify a toothbrush. Using a little hobbyist size propane torch (maybe a candle flame would work too), I carefully heated a toothbrush to soften the plastic and turn the head to (just slightly more than) a 90 degree angle. Rinsing out the cone filter housing only takes seconds now after each use and never any coffee or tea build up in the housing.

The price? ... you only cry once. Couldn't tell you what I paid for the Moccamasters I have. When I'm drinking a perfect cup of coffee or tea consistently cup to cup, cup after cup, everyday for years, knowing I will never have to ever buy another brewer, price is something that never crosses my mind.

Technivorn Moccamaster is in the heirloom realm. The build quality is such that these things will stand up to generational use. Can't say that about many modern appliances.

EDIT: If I didn't love the convenience and consistency of the Cup-one, I'd break out the Melitta pour-overs I have. They make just as good or almost as good a cup of coffee but require much more personal focus to bring water to a perfect temp and perform a careful pour. When using the pour-over I always feel like I'm trying to produce Moccamaster results.

Couple of shipboard anecdotes: Had a Division Officer that would walk around to other ship's spaces with a fresh carafe to share the best coffee on the ship with his "O" buddies. Ship's Captain came through our spaces on a scheduled inspection one day and I shared a cup of coffee with him. Captain very carefully inspected the Moccamaster for electrical safety compliance. He was looking for a way to walk out with the Moccamaster Big Grin LOL.

As they say, "A cup of coffee shared with a friend is happiness tasted and time well spent". With the Moccamaster, I get it right every time.
