Last time I was there an Indian approached me asking for money. I refused and he got belligerent. I quit taking pictures. He followed me to the car where my wife was waiting and said he found it amazing that I could afford a camera but couldn't afford 10 dollars to give him. When we pulled up I noticed him sitting on a bench across the street with a female. As I opened the car door, I looked over and saw that she had her iPhone out filming us. He was trying to provoke something. Luckily I kept my cool even when he put his hand on the door after I got in the passenger seat. We then drove to city hall to file a complaint. Like trying to explain physics to a herd of cows. I do my best to stay out of Winslow.

Honestly there aint much between Flagstaff and Albuquerque in terms of nice cities or towns. A couple decent hotels here and there.

We might be persuaded to bypass Gallup abs continue on to Albuquerque, or as suggested, just stay in Arizona. We were thinking it would be good to “check it off the list” but maybe it should wait until we are going all the way to Texas?

Driving a portion of 66 sounds interesting. Will have to look at that more.

Most of I-40/Route 66 through NM is a bore. I wouldn't stay, except to empty your bladder and fill your tank, in Gallup or Grants. I recommend Route 64 across the northern part of the state. I have personally been on the section from Chama, Taos and Cimarron, albeit a long time ago.

I currently have a daughter going to school in Flagstaff so I've been spending a lot of time there. Walnut Canyon is a must see. It is a nice little hike with a few stairs thrown in. If you are into native ruins there is also a driving loop you can take and stop at several different ruins. I believe it's called Wupatki??? Like others have commented on unless you have a reason to go to Gallup its just not a great place. I would spend my time instead at the Grand Canyon and take the shuttle up to Hermits rest and hike back to the village. And I would also recommend Fat Olives in Flagstaff. There are several really good places to eat. My favorite is called the Shift, located downtown.

There is no reason to go to Gallup, none, nada, zip, zero. It really is just kind of a dirty, nasty, Rez town. If your wife wants to see New Mexico, go further. Acoma Pueblo is an interesting place off of I-40, it hasn't been modernized or overly turistified yet. There's also Albuquerque and Santa Fe if you want to go further. Either go further, or spend more time in Arizona.

La Posada in Winslow is a really cool hotel. Stated by the railroad as a means to bring tourists out west. It's been renovated and their restaurant is great. Not too much else to be said for Winslow other than it's a good basecamp to explore the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest from. Don't stand too close to the statue on the corner, it gets used as a urinal and vomitorium at night.

89A between Flagstaff and Sedona is a spectacular drive. Jerome is a funky little ghost town turned artist colony west of Sedona. The drive from Prescott to Jerome on Mingus Mountain is a spectacular driver, a very winding mountain road not for the faint of heart. I have a love/hate relationship with Sedona; love the natural beauty but the populace can get on your nerves lots of love, crystals and moonbeam shit.

Drive as much of Route 66 as you can instead of I-40. Scenic drive and it's cool to seem some of the old towns like Peach Springs and Seligman.

Oatman is another funky ghost town turned artist colony outside of Bullhead City. Fun trip just watch out for the burros that run wild.

Laughlin is the town across from Bullhead City with the casinos. Way back when in nursing school when I had clinical in Kingman I'd stay in Laughling. Signed up for all of the loyalty programs and miked it for as many free rooms, buffets or anything else I could get. Aquarius is probably the nicest. Edgewater is the oldest with a cool car collection/museum.

Glad to see you back! I’ve been missing your posts and contributions. I hope to see you posting around here a little more.

Hello from Bullhead City, all. My wife is visiting with her friend today and I’ve been running around this area just kinda exploring and getting a feel for it.

Beancooker, thanks for the offer. I will mention it to my wife and see if some desert driving might be on her to-do list.

Will stay in this area tonight after having dinner with our friends and tomorrow we turn east..: destination unknown as of yet. Kicking around various ideas still…

My wife does want to do at least a little trip to see the Canyon, but we are ok with a short trip there. Maybe a single “must see” or relatively short hike. We’ll come back with the kids another time and spend longer in the park.

I know she also likes the idea of just driving to Gallup despite the advice that there isn’t anything there. It would be drive there to the hotel and bed down, checking New Mexico off our “Visited” list, and then leaving early the next morning to spend time in Petrified Forrest National Park…

Any thoughts on Petrified Forrest NP? What to do/see?

If I remember right from when I went, it's pretty much just the NP. Other than the gift shop there isn't much to see. That and a dozen other shops nearby that sell petrified wood as well.
