Link & Tink, killers in training! We picked up these two semi feral kittens for varmint eradication in the shop on our property. They were born to a feral cat and aparently abandoned. 3 in the litter. Originally the plan was for one, but the better half decided they needed each other and maybe they would not only hunt better in a pair but will be more likely to stick around as a pair.

They will not be in house cats, but also not outdoor cats. We have a 1200sqft building on our off-grid property that needs the varmint population controlled. That will be their domain. We have done some reading on how to keep/train them and they will eventually have some outside freedom. There is just no way around them being solely indoors cats in this environment.

If anyone has some good advice training/raising barn cat varmint killers, please chime in.

Link is the grey one with mask and Tink is the black one.

Cats tend to learn how to hunt from their mothers, but practice and the ability to watch how the other kitten fares should help. If they attack your ankles, they're training.

Get one of those toys that's attached to a rod and string. That really gets their prey drive going.

Anything you can do to encourage that prey drive and reward it will make them want to bring you 'presents'.

Honestly though, most cats do varmint eradication on their own with no encouragement. House cats are the deadlist animals on the planet.

Don't feed them much.

Not really.

I think they will just do it on their own. I have a cat that we rescued even younger than that and he’s the sweetest and cuddliest cat you’ll ever meet, he’s like a puppy that meows. But if I brake out that toy with a string and a fake mouse he turns into Kujo cat and growls like a nasty ass old junk yard dog as he rips the thing to shreds. It’s actually kind of scary, those toys never last more than 2 min.

This! Cute little puff balls. I've had indoor and outdoor (barn cats) cats my whole life. IIRC they all learned to hunt and kill without any help. The barn cats were amazing as we NEVER found a rodent in the barn EVER. My house cats regularly bring rabbits parts home.

You had me at kitty pics... No advice, but damn Link is adorable. Pretty sure they like to kill stuff on their own and if left to their own devices they will kill anything they can.

My experience is that they either hunt or they don't. Hopefully you got a couple of hunters.

Dogs have masters. Kitties have subjects. That's just how it is. Nor can a kitty be trained unless she wants to be. Play with them in ways that mimic stalking and pouncing. That should get them started, but kitties are hardwired to hunt rodents etc. If they are so motivated, they'll train themselves to varmint hunt. Or you could have what I do; a kitteh who eats, sleeps, poops and barfs grass chunks on my porch.

Other than that, let the murderous little puff balls do what comes naturally and send more pics.

He beat me to it. Get them their shots too.

We used to have CONSTANT issues with pack rats getting under the car hoods, chewing wires, etc making nests. Then after our last Husky passed we were able to get a few cats again. ZERO issue since we adopted a couple of shelter cats.

We find rat, mouse even the occasional snake carcasses. They DO keep the place rodent free.
