Crystal Mangum, who accused three Duke lacrosse players of rape, now says she lied

Crystal Mangum, the former exotic dancer who accused three Duke men’s lacrosse players of rape in 2006, igniting a national firestorm, now says she lied about the encounter.

“I testified falsely against them by saying that they raped me when they didn’t, and that was wrong. And I betrayed the trust of a lot of other people who believed in me,” Mangum said on the web show “Let’s Talk with Kat,” hosted by Katerena DePasquale.

The interview took place at the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women, where Mangum is serving time for a 2013 second-degree murder conviction for stabbing her boyfriend.

“I made up a story that wasn’t true because I wanted validation from people and not from God,” Mangum said.

“I want them to know that I love them, and they didn’t deserve that, and I hope that they can forgive me,” she said.

Mangum’s admission comes nearly two decades after she said she was raped by former players David Evans, Collin Finnerty and Reade Seligmann.

According to the Duke student newspaper, Duke Athletics declined to comment. The university, and the school’s president and head men’s lacrosse coach at the time, did not respond to the student newspaper’s request for comment. There’s been no reported comment from the players.

The three were arrested following the woman’s allegations of sexual assault at a party.

The charges brought broad media attention, forced the cancellation of the team’s 2006 season, and cost coach Mike Pressler his job. The district attorney on the case was convicted of criminal contempt and disbarred.

In April 2007, the state’s then-Attorney General Roy Cooper, who is now governor, reviewed the case and exonerated the three men, declaring that the charges never should have been brought against them.

Duke University and the three players reached an undisclosed settlement shortly after the charges were dropped.

The city of Durham settled a lawsuit by the three men in 2014. As part of the settlement, Durham agreed to pay $50,000 to the North Carolina Innocence Inquiry Commission.

Glad she found God. Maybe if she had been given a real sentence the first time she committed attempted murder instead of time served she wouldn’t have stabbed the next guy to death ? Hope she mentally heals. Maybe she’s angling for clemency from dementia Joe.

What really grinds my gears about that case is the prosecutor who lied and allegedly conspired with the DNA lab to withhold evidence of innocence, he only did 1 day in jail. That right there is some BS. He should do the whole sentences those boys were facing. Big deal he got disbarred. At least he’s free. He willingly wrecked their life. How many other cases did he screw somebody ?if those kids hadn’t had wealthy families to pay good lawyers to investigate they’d still be sitting in prison.

Undisclosed settlement. Would like to see the figures. Duke has some deep pockets. Years ago a cabinet member faced charges.(I believe it was a Labor Secretary. Having all his charges dismissed he wondered what room to go to to get his reputation back.

She gets no sympathy from me.

I wonder if the woman that lied about Clarence Thomas will ever fess up.

"Seligmann, Finnerty, and Evans brought a civil lawsuit against Duke University, which was settled. The university paid approximately $20 million to each claimant. The claimants also sought further unspecified damages and called for criminal justice reform laws in a federal civil rights lawsuit filed against the City of Durham and its police department.[12]"

It's outrageous that this started and grew.

She hurt a lot of people way beyond the defendants simply because she wanted attention. Apparently swinging on a pole with men throwing money at her was insufficient validation.

I think she might still be wanting validation from people.

The only validation she wanted was big bucks from Duke to go away. That didn’t go well for her.

But sitting in jail since 2013 for murder and she comes clean finally - for more attention.

I heard about this story on my way into work this morning about Stephen Miller (PDJT’s incoming White House deputy Chief of Staff for Policy, and Homeland Security advisor) defending the Duke lacrosse players ~18 years ago against the sham case when he was a senior at Duke.
