Cherohala Skyway is nicer road, better views, and much less traffic.

Been on it with a bike, usually pretty crowded and with Helene I don’t know if it’s a great idea. Need to pretty much concentrate the whole tail. It is fun but don’t over do it the first time. Definitely no for your son.

I started avoiding that area on the weekend 20+ years ago.

You might call the hotel and ask about conditions.

I've done it on the Ultra and in the Vette. Drove like an old fart both times. Fun drive. Not a good place to learn how to drive a stick though imho. But have fun and be safe.

My first post wasn’t clear, but I did clarify the above in my second post. It was supposed to be a joke. I do have to teach him to drive stick, but how much would he learn on a road where he’d only need second gear?

Having ridden it, I’d skip. Not a place where I’d want to break a motor in. Once fully broken motor, sure. First 1000 miles seating rings and breaking a motor in is super important, at least to me. Do it right, you make the most HP/TQ, and will have a very long lasting engine. Hammer on it early on, you may end up with an oil burner, and decrease longevity.

The 28 was much better IMO

Agreed, 28 is the better road JMO,

The dragon is fun, 318 turns, 11 miles and if you aren't moving along you will have crotch rockets on your tail.

Be courteous and use the pull offs if they are on you, let them by, then back out to enjoy the ride.

Weekdays are best, weekends are nuts, run it from TN to NC, you'll be on the outside lane

I was looking at 28 to get there, but 28 is closed at Pine Mountain. Looks like we could hit 28 in Highlands.

My comment was directed at the people who posted AFTER his 2nd post.

Now is busy season and it gets dark earlier.
Due to road closures in other nearby areas, I suspect it could be extra crowded this year.

As a sight seeing area, probably a great place.
As a high performance driving exercise, not so good for all sorts of reasons.

Nope. You’ll be rushed. It’ll be getting dark,
go back when you have more time and on a weekday, consider multiple passes enjoy the scenery.


Advice for anyone who does it…
STAY in your lane!
Roll your windows down and listen for the crotch rockets gaining on you,
Signal and pull off at the first opportunity. There are some pull offs where you can get out of the way and let them go!

My Miata feels right at home there

I actually did it in a Chevy Astro van full of passengers once!
True story… my neck was actually sore for a couple days!

The Tennessee State Trooper assigned to that area of the state has held the record for the most speeding tickets written for multiple years! You have been warned!

Maybe try the “Cherry Cola” Skyway as mentioned…

You can't take it south from Highlands because it's closed in Pine Mountain, GA.

If we do this, we'll be coming up from South Carolina. It all depends on how much time we spend at the dealership. It's easy to say do it some other time, but we're going to be just about right there tomorrow. The reality is my son is in college and this maybe our last road trip together. Doing it some other time means a 24 hour round trip just to get there and back. I have two more kids in high school; a freshman son and a junior daughter. University visits with my daughter are going to start happening soon.

That's it. You can get a natural, fun rythm in second gear for almost all of it. Very little shifting, very little braking; control it with your throttle (accelerator).

I'm a big fan! Its totally worth it. This was from our yearly blue ridge gathering.

I may be wrong about SR-28 being closed in Georgia. Apple Maps says it’s closed, but there no mention of it on the GADOT or Rabun County websites.
