Is there any reason to think that a car that you special order from the factory
will be any more or less likely to have problems,
then one that you just buy right off the lot?

There shouldn't be any difference other than the extra time for it to arrive at your dealer. I think that the people on the assembly line make the cars from an order sheet. There shouldn't be any difference.

I love it here!

I would think it would be the other way around. While sitting on the lot, the dealer can screw with the car (allow it to be test driven, etc.) If you order a car, it shows up, they prep it, you drive it away. Less opportunity for shenanigans

Had an ex girl friend use CarsDirect.com to buy her Ford Escape.

She got all the options she wanted and the deal seemed to happen with any hassles whatsoever.

Back in 1973, my parents ordered a well optioned woody Chevrolet station wagon and were there when it was taken off the car carrier. Needless to say, after prepping the vehicle, they took pocession. It was a beautiful car in all ways. Nothing like the smell of a new car.

Should be good to go. I won't let my dealer prep mine.
There will be no drilling of holes for a front plate nor them adhering any of their logos on my car. I was there right after they took it off the truck. They did whatever they had to legally and I drove it right to my detailer for him to prep.

One point to consider is the build date. Ordering one built to order may be a more recent build than one on the lot.

You can check the build date for cars on the lot to reduce this difference.

Sometimes bugs get smoothed out as production continues. Of course, sometimes bugs get added.

All other things being equal, I'd prefer a more recent build date.
