Son is 26 years old with apparent mental age of 12. Neighbor and son were the front seat of his truck with boy trying to protect his head and get away. When the father took a swing at the boy, I started to call 911. The police came by before I could complete the call. The boy had locked himself out of the house earlier and the police were coming back out to check on him. I drove up as the fight was going on. Father was arrested and the son was taken to a protective location. I gave a statement to the arresting officer. Don’t know what started this.

Life with a developmentally disabled child is difficult in the best of times. The restrictions on being outside the home currently in place add an extra stressor for child and parent. I’m guessing the parent regrets his actions. Prayers for all involved.

The boy’s school is of course shut down and he was staying home by himself. The police had called the father to leave work to unlock the house earlier.

Yep, going to be more of this, restricting movements of kids/adults with challenges mentally will cause more problems.

Similar
We had a man, probably in late 20's to early 30's with some metal disability on a flight from SLU to IND one night that had us sitting on the taxiway for too long. He started getting upset, all he knew is it was 9pm and he was supposed to be in IND.

Everything worked out, long story short, pilot got emergency clearance and dropped the hammer all the way never heard the engines cut back.

Guy ended up being ok, he just knew where he was supposed to be, and he wasn't there..

I feel for families with these issues...

The boy is definitely mentally handicapped. He always would just smile and wave anytime I was outside. Father had also told me some time ago that the boy was in a special school for handicapped adults. After the EMT finished he wanted to hug her. He also did that to the police officer.

I'm just going to take a swing at this and say maybe it's because he witnessed a really crappy situation where no one really won, even the responders, and perhaps he just laid it out here to get it off his chest in what is generally a friendly environment.

Yes, not knowing the ins an outs of this situation,I would parrot the previous post to hope and pray for a good outcome. Times are tough, no doubt about that.

I think it’s okay to ask. No one is a mind reader. It may not apply to the OP but a lot of people say something with an intent that’s not readily apparent. Understanding the intent could very well enhance the understanding of the context.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

Many years ago, when I was a much younger man, I worked in mental health with kids <21 years of age. I saw a lot of broken families, mostly husbands leaving the mentally handicapped child with the mother. Some families knew they couldn’t take care of the handicapped child and gave them up. They stayed in group homes.

It was tough to see people go through that. The older I get, the more I realize how fortunate most of us are and pisses me off when people take their good life for granted.
