Powered Speakers for Music - Any recommendations? Login/Join

I would like to replace my 30 year-old Infinity speakers and my Onkyo receiver that is crapping out. I listen to music on several Sirius XM channels, and on CDs.

Since I don’t listen to AM/FM radio, it dawned on me that all I probably need is a pair of powered speakers. With Bluetooth I can stream music from the XM app on my iPad, and just plug the CD player into the audio jacks in the back of the speaker.

Anyone have a recommendation for a set of powered Bluetooth speakers for music? I’m looking for bookshelf sized speakers, not big floor standing ones or tiny computer speakers. I realize I may have to add a subwoofer for low bass.

I’ve considered Klipsch speakers, but a lot of reviews rate the app needed to control them as almost non-functional. I’d like to keep the price under $500.

Please help bring me into the 21st century Cool

I have these:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/prod...n_title?ie=UTF8&th=1

I use them in our outdoor kitchen. They are good powerful little speakers. I use a cheap Android tablet to stream Spotify to them via Bluetooth. I could use my phone but don't want the notification interruptions or it disconnects when I walk away with my phone. They have an Aux port but not sure how you would get your CD player connected. I am guessing RCA to 3.5 mini would work, but can't confirm that.

A used pair of KEF LSX speakers should get you in that zone. You don't have to connect them with a wire like any of the Klipsch models, sound great, can also be connected to a TV for home theater and have a subwoofer port or will connect to a wireless KEF subwoofer connection.

Audioengine HD6 is what I would look at.
I have the passive version but if I were looking for a BT speaker I would definitely consider these.
The passive ones sound great especially for the size.

Thanks for the recommendations. Keep ‘em coming if anyone has a pair of speakers they like.

Klipsch the Fives?
Decent bass in them for their size, although my son does listen to them with a Klipsch sub as well. They are very versatile as far as inputs. I wasn’t impressed for the first few hours but now they sound great for listening to Rush and Pink Floyd.

We recently purchased a pair of Elac speakers for one of our tv setups. They sound really good, as good as my older Bowers & Wilkins.

The powered Elac list at $599 a pair but you might find them under your $500 limit.

Fwiw, I recommend against any device that relies on a custom phone app. I've had a couple of gizmos become useless when the phone app stopped working. When the phone operating system updates or you upgrade to a newer phone, the app may no longer be compatible.

Bluetooth is fine, but I would avoid using an Acme brand speaker if it requires you use their Acme App to send music to the speaker.

That’s the issue with Klipsch speakers. Great speakers, lousy app.

I’ll second the recommendation of Audioengine HD-6’s. I have other powered speakers from Audioengine, but the HD-6’s are my main speakers now.

not sure how "high end" you want to go, but I had Sonos throughout the house and love it. App is pretty good and I get Sirus through it. Single speaker sounds pretty good. I have the One and Five models.

I've got a pair of the AudioEngine A2 on my desk. They freaking rock for their size. If the big brothers are anything like it. They'd be good to go.

do you have surround sound connected to the tv, there are plenty of BT enabled sound bars with subs that sound very good, at all price points.

Link

The Samsung in the link is $379 has BT, wireless sub, so you can play your music from an iPad, iPhone, if you have a smart TV directly to the soundbar with an app. You can spend more or less for any of these units

I’ve got an old pair of KRK powered studio monitors connected to a Denon pro Bluetooth module in the shop. Couple monoprice XLRs. Streaming from an old iPhone 7. Works great

If you are happy with your old Infinity speakers, you can just pick up a little D-class amp from Amazon or Parts Express and power them off it. I have a little Fosi that works great. Less than $100 and you can upgrade your speakers later if you like. I believe some of the D class amps even have a sub-woofer output if you want to go that route.

My speakers are all vintage, including some old JBLs, Dahlquist, Thiel, Cerwin Vegas, Boston Acoustics, Advent, etc. You can sometimes still find deals on them if you are willing to put some work into them (refoam, recap). There is lots of new stuff that sounds great too, but I'm just old school when it comes to speakers.

I would bookmark these, and check all through Black Friday/Holiday season. When they go on sale for $300 a pair, buy them. You get a new AVR with BT built in, for $300 and change at the same time. Then later, if you feel the need, add a small sub.
