My ongoing issue with Apple is nearing a conclusion. I am the unfortunate owner of an iPhone 7 that is blessed with a defective logic board/antenna which causes the phone to randomly and in accordance with Murphy’s law at the most inopportune time go into stupid mode. When the phone malfunctions it loses cellular signal and eventually gives you an error message and need for an update that doesn’t exist.

My first trip to apple’s Genius Bar was frustrating. My phone was scarred straight in the store and worked fine so they wouldn’t do anything. Today I showed them screen shots of the error messages and they have finally agreed my phone is actually defective (duh!) and it will be getting a new logic board and battery on apple’s dime.

While in the Apple store the guy in front of me and behind me in line were there for the exact same reason.

I first noticed the issue when the phone began shutting down and/or restarting on its own and requiring a password to unlock. It did that for a few days then the delightful “no service” message began to appear.

From what one of the Apple employees said apparently Apple no longer works with the parts vendor that supplied the defective logic boards.

This exact issue happened to me last September - I had one month left of apple care when it happened - I went through remote support and they scheduled an appointment at an apple store - about 2 hours away, and about a week out. I show up - they look at it and thankfully it was showing no service when I showed up. It had been intermittent issues - the last couple days prior to the service appointment it was no service all the time and the lady said typically they are intermittent then finally give up the ghost and fail. They swapped my phone out right there with a new one - lady told me they do not use refurbished or repair anything but the whole phone in the store - so I got a brand new iPhone 7 which I am still using and plan to hang onto as long as I can.

Really surprised they didn't just give you a new phone rather than having a tech tear your's apart for such a major repair. When I cracked the screen on mine, they gave me a new phone for the price of replacing the screen (about $40 as I recall) because the Apple kid said there were too many potential issues doing such a repair. BTW, both wife and I have had iPhone 7's since they first came out with no issues... well other than me being a klutz and dropping it off of the elliptical at the gym.

My first 7 Plus had this issue and was out of warranty when it happened. The Apple Store let me buy a new one for something like $365, which I very grudgingly did. But a few weeks later they sent me an apology letter and a refund for $200. Didn't see that one coming.

On one hand I like that Apple is fixing a 3 year old phone that is obviously defective but should it really take THREE separate trips to the apple store to get a resolution? I live 45 minutes from their dang store.

I was strongly considering Samsung for my next smartphone before my 7 started having issues. Given my experience with apple I still plan on making a switch when my 7 becomes completely obsolete.

I'd be upset too Stickman.

Guess I'm lucky. I have a 2 year old Iphone 7 that work issued me and it's running just fine.

I will say though that I've had my complaints about Apple's service with my wife's iPhone. She had an issue that could have been resolved in 2 seconds but they insisted on an appointment (walked up to their store in the mall). We left and stopped at Verizon on the way out and they took care of it.

Apple can be a bit goofy at times. My daughter has a laptop where a random key just stopped working. Known issue that everybody bitched about. 500 bucks to fix. FML. I sat on the issue because that’s half the price of a new one. When I finally decided to fix it, Apple had acknowledged the issue and it was free.

Weird. And stupid. Good way to lose customers who are buying high end, likely over priced products.

I thought it was software related from a bad update. My 5s started getting it after I updated. I had to do a hard restore. Problem solved.

On the 7 it isn’t software related. At least in my case it wasn’t. They have an update they try but in my case and the guy behind me in line it rendered our phones inoperable. One of the guys said it is a defective logic board and that they no longer use whoever it was that made the 7’s board for my serial number range.
