I was at about $500 a month. Granted I was single and going out to bars so that was inflated drink prices.

Me too. I have no issue with those who drink, as long as your not driving drunk I couldn't care less. But not drinking does seem to take some folks by surprise. I just never cared for it.

After I became an LEO I quickly concluded that if ethyl alcohol didn’t exist it would have been one of the greatest of all boons to humanity. During my five years in the Army in Germany every rape, virtually all aggravated assaults, virtually every robbery, and most of the intentional homicides my office investigated involved someone—victim, perpetrator, or both—who was drunk.

There is, of course, nothing I can do about the fact that it does exist, so I’ll continue to enjoy it myself.

I consider alcohol a food in many ways, because for me, the two go hand-in-hand. Ribeye steak with a really good cabernet is sublime. Followed by a good scotch or brandy with a cigar takes it a lot further in enjoyment.

I have a 50's taste for drinks; martinis, manhattans, etc. Not close to The Thin Man, but a cocktail after work is a ritual of mine most days out of the week. As someone else posted, moderation is key. Getting sloppy drunk is not a thing I indulge in. More than anything, the taste is what I love.

I enjoy alcohol too much to let it become a problem. Nothing better(to me,at least) than capping off a day with a drink.

DUI is a different story, dont know how I survive the late 80s / early 90s unscathed

I've been 12 years sober. Still miss booze every day. I don't have a thing at all against those who imbibe, it's just I cant control my own drinking, so I have to abstain completely.

I really enjoyed a lot of whiskey, some good-some bad, and I have fond memories of it...as well as empty spots where memories should have been, but I misplaced them.

I didn't start drinking until I turned 40. I keep it in check but I drink more in the winter. When Spring comes along, I stop all bad habits so I can concentrate on getting my summer body. I can't take off my shirt if I have a gut so I'm strict. After summer is over, I'll drink again.

This is what I've come to learn after being married to a French woman for five years now and being initiated into her family's dining rituals. I've now come to appreciate what alcohol brings to the table (pardon the pun).

I like my beer, but I have cut way back from what I used to, which was near-intoxication every night. I went for two periods, one lasting ~8 months, another ~4 months, where I was a guest in a non-drinking household and didn't have any. (I'd rather not get into that deeper, but no, it wasn't jail.) I didn't miss it all that much. Then again, I don't get to see the misery caused or fueled by excessive drinking.

I am generally not a happy person and see the only point of alcohol as a way to get blackout shitfaced drunk to forget whatever is bothering me. Never seemed like a good idea to start. Still think about it from time to time though.

Same here. I don't abuse it at all and most weekends I'm out listening to a band play. I'll have a few and then stop but I do enjoy it.
I have a few friends that can't stop and end up stupid drunk by the end of the night. They always have a driver but when you can't remember what happened the night before, well, that's too much.

John Wayne said "I don't trust a man that doesn't drink". People that drink too much ought not to be trusted more often than not as well. Regarding drinking to excess and having a spouse/family, that is cheating them out of their time with you. And maybe their money.

For those of us that have gotten to do a lot of work travel and reached the higher levels of airline and hotel frequent flyer/guest status, you would not believe how much it all revolves around "complimentary" alcohol:

Business or First class flight - unlimited drinks
Business class lounges - unlimited free basic drinks
First class lounges - unlimited drinks of better stuff
Hotel executive lounge happy hour - 2 to 4 hours each night - unlimited drinks
Every business dinner has drinks - a LOT in some countries, especially East Asia

I know some that don't drink and were firm and repetitive until people "got it", but in some places the idea of a non-drinker is quite strange to the locals.

I understand where the OP is coming from. It has affected my parents, and a couple of my siblings. My mother finally over came her alcoholism but only after she reached her low and all family members her sisters and children would not enable her anymore. She earned a nursing degree in her late 50s.

It has torn many families apart, but it’s the addictive personality I believe is the real issue. Weather it is alcohol, drugs, gambling, sex you name it it can all be destructive.

I will have a drink once in a while I think over a course of a year maybe 50 drinks.
