Will Mapp gas get 3/16 or 1/4 steel hot enough to bend or hammer flat on an anvil?

I need to fabricate a weed hook for my lake, and I have tons of used up mower blades to use for stock. Some I need to flatten into bar stock, and some I will need to bend at 45 degrees or so.

One option for the bend is to score the steel with a grinding wheel, cold bend it, and then weld the inside of the bend, but I'd rather just hot bend it if possible.

If Mapp won't do it, is there another single bottle gas that will generate enough heat? I'd love to have an oxy-acetylene kit, but I'm not trained on it, and it wouldn't get enough use to justify the cost.

Oh, yeah.

3/8 inch is about where it is more difficult as area increases and trying to keep anything more than a several square inches hot enough to work with. But what you are talking about will be no trouble.

There is always something fun about a torch isn’t there?
Even if you go with the Bernzomatic easy click trigger instead of the old scratchy flint starter style.

I’ve used mine for a ton of stuff and just recently heated up some brackets on my buddy’s Tacoma to fit a larger spare under the bed.
Not quite 3/16 but took very little time to be able to bend them where we needed them.

If you get one of the push button start torches, don't trust the safety if you carry it in a tool bag. My friend had one in his tool bag that was in the back of his truck. His truck caught on fire and ended up burning and ruining his bedliner before he could extinguish it. After he told me about this, I checked my torch. The safety mechanism was broken and the torch would start if the trigger was pressed. The safety is just made of plastic and easily damaged. Now, I always remove the torch head from the gas bottle before I put it in my tool bag.

Thanks for this.
Never thought of that and do toss my torch in the bag on occasion.

Mapp gas (the new stuff, not the old stuff) only burns 100deg hotter than propane.
It also costs ~4x as much.
Save your money use propane.

I have the push button attachment and the safety never worked at all. I use mine mainly now for killing scorpions in the backyard. But I bought it for burning off old suspension bushings. I've used it for carmelizing sugar crystals on creme brulee before too. Great thing to have around the house.

Bluefire is (basically) MAPP, not MAP Pro (the new stuff).

AC guys use it around here. It's 5600F
