Peace through superior firepower |
Looks like a G43, maybe? https://nypost.com/2023/11/08/...&utm_campaign=nypost https://twitter.com/nypost/status/1722406894902366260 An elderly American has been arrested after a gunman was caught on camera walking up to environmental protesters blocking a Panamanian highway Tuesday and blasting two of them to death. Disturbing footage showed a man with gray hair and glasses casually approaching the blockade on the Pan-American Highway and waving his finger while arguing with the demonstrators — before pulling out a gun and opening fire. Other footage showed people standing around bodies in the road in the Chame sector west of Panama City as well as the gunman being cuffed and led to a squad car. Police later shared a photo of the suspect handcuffed to a pipe as he was identified as Kenneth Darlington, 77, a lawyer and professor who holds dual citizenship in the US and Panama, according to Newsroom Panama and Agence France-Presse. One of the shot protesters died at the scene while the second was pronounced dead at a local hospital, AFP said. The violence came during the third week of protests over a large mining contract that allows Canada-based First Quantum Minerals to operate the region’s largest pit copper mine for at least 20 more years. The roadblocks have caused up to $80 million in daily losses to businesses and have shuttered schools nationwide for more than a week. Panama President Laurentino Cortizo sent his condolences to the dead protesters’ families, saying that such a crime “has no place” in his nation’s supportive society. The deadly shooting came after Panamanian media reported that a demonstrator was run over and killed last week by a foreigner attempting to drive past a roadblock. The 19,000-mile Pan-American Highway is the world’s largest route, spanning from Alaska to Argentina with a break in the Darién Gap.

I can see why the Panamanians are protesting. Their .gov is about to give a Canadian company a 20 year contract to extract and process copper ore. This is Panama's ore, they need to jobs and the profit should go to Panamanians. The lawyer who shot the protestors, well that was murder, hope he spends the rest of his life in prison. -c1steve

He's all out of fucks to give. You'll need to sign in to youtube to see the vid. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3--161-v6uw At 77, it's possible that he's terminally ill and is not overly concerned about prison.

My first engineer on my ship grew up in Panama. He's about ten years older than me. He's an American with Panamanian citizenship. After the lockdowns he finally moved his family to Florida. He sent me that video yesterday. His father went to school and worked with the very man who shot and killed the two protesters. He says he will likely die in prison there. Lot of bad shit going on in Panama right now. I'm glad my engineer and his wife and two little girls are out of there. ~Alan Acta Non Verba NRA Life Member (Patron) God, Family, Guns, Country Men will fight and die to protect women... because women protect everything else. ~Andrew Klavan

I just started bidding to avoid going to Panama. Several stories have come out from our corporate security about pilots getting caught up in pepper spray incidents by accident during the protests. Just in the wrong place at the wrong time while minding their own business… Sucks. Panama City is a decent place if things aren’t going haywire. Been there several times… "If you’re a leader, you lead the way. Not just on the easy ones; you take the tough ones too…” – MAJ Richard D. Winters (1918-2011), E Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne "Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil... Therefore, as tongues of fire lick up straw and as dry grass sinks down in the flames, so their roots will decay and their flowers blow away like dust; for they have rejected the law of the Lord Almighty and spurned the word of the Holy One of Israel." - Isaiah 5:20,24

I'm honestly surprised this has not yet happened here. I agree that he may have a terminal diagnosis and reached fuck it level four. "Fixed fortifications are monuments to mans stupidity" - George S. Patton

Step by step walk the thousand mile road |
I recall this movie quote whenever there is an incident like this.
Seriously, openly committing murder (or at the very least manslaughter) in Panama? That murderer had zero left to lose after the first one. And even less after the second. I wonder why he stopped as much as I wonder why he started. I think him a late-stage terminally ill, mentally ill, narcissist to have killed two people over being inconvenienced. If they were trying to gain attention to their cause, they certainly succeeded. A lot of the twitter comments are interesting; it shows that the average person is sick and tired of people blocking their ability to travel with their “protests”. I agree that these were not like our piece of shit road blockers over some useless thug that got what was coming to them but they make enemies of themselves when they try to make a statement by pissing off people that have nothing to do with what they are protesting. Trying to force people to agree with them makes them no better than the government’s perfidy of allowing people like this to impact people trying to live their own lives. “Remember to get vaccinated or a vaccinated person might get sick from a virus they got vaccinated against because you’re not vaccinated.” - author unknown

Made from a different mold |
My take is different...Not so much inconvenienced but rather held hostage. I don't know if he'd been on that road for 5 minutes or 5 days waiting to get past the fuckwads in the street, but I can tell you that every minute stuck on the road is a minute that he's not where he wants to be and it's also an opportunity for some shitbag to come along and rob folks waiting to get by. I hope you get my point about being held hostage. These fucks believe that because THEY THINK THEY'RE RIGHT, that they have the RIGHT to hold everyone hostage until they get their way. Climate protests, BLM protests, etc. They're all the same. We'll hold your road, your building, your life for ransom. THE RANSOM? Whatever bullshit they're spewing. What's gonna happen when some dumbasses stage a pro Palestine protest on 66 or Rt 50 on a Friday afternoon about 4PM all because they hate Jews? ___________________________ No thanks, I've already got a penguin.

Prepared for the Worst, Providing the Best |
That guy was a crazy SOB, and that shooting was entirely unjustifed. Yeah, they were blocking the road, but I didn't see any threatening behavior at all by the demonstrators in that video...I've definitely seen a lot worse out of the "peaceful protests" here in the US. Dude is likely going to spend the rest of his life in a Panamanian prison, and from what I saw in that video he deserves it.

It's Panama, the rules are different down there. ______________________________________________________________________ "When its time to shoot, shoot. Unjustified, yes. But if Panama were anything like The States, it would mean the road they are heading down is, the neutering of law enforcement, leaving vigilantism. Like I've seen suggested, this is like Falling Down, the Panama version. Credit to ABL.

This x1000. People make claims like, "they should have the right to protest like this, it's only a "minor convenience."" No, that's the BEST case scenario. What if one of the hundreds or thousands of people you are holding captive is on their way to the hospital? What about the emergency vehicles that get stuck because of your "protest." Holding people captive in an attempt to further a political agenda is not the definition of "protest," its the definition of "terrorism."

Blocking the road, sidewalk, entrance to a building or anything that impedes my ability to freely move about is already an action I consider to be a threat. How many videos have we seen of people inadvertently drive onto a road where these protests are happening only to have their car surrounded by protesters who kick and pound on the vehicle terrorizing the occupants. Or innocent people being surrounded on the sidewalk or street by some thugs who harass and then pepper spray them all in the name of some protest. The whole idea behind blockades or preventing people from getting to where they need to go who have nothing to do with your protest is to bring about confrontation. If it were to simply bring about awareness there are a plethora of other ways of doing that that do not involve blockades that restrict other peoples freedom of movement. Not in any way trying to justify what this guy did. For whatever reason this guy was out of fucks to give and may have gone there with the sole purpose of laying low a couple of these people. He will get what he deserves. This message has been edited. Last edited by: lastmanstanding, "Fixed fortifications are monuments to mans stupidity" - George S. Patton

I'm sure the Panamanian Government is getting a nice share of the profits and I suspect that Canadian company is going to hire locals to work the mine... the protest are probably about the environmental impact of open strip mining. My Native American Name: "Runs with Scissors"
