Gun Safe Room Question Login/Join

A good friend of mine is getting his old house torn down and a new stick house built. He has chosen a floor plan from the builder.

It has a gun safe room.

Would that mean it has fortified walls and the ability to hang a safe door if it is labeled as a gun safe room on the plans??

See image of plans below.

One would think; however, have him get with the builder and ask what building a gun safe room entails. Don't forget the ceiling and floor, too. Will the room be on a concrete slab?

Also will need power in there for a dehumidifier.

I thought about that: Also will need power in there for a dehumidifier.

Didn't think about the roof and floors being in the interior of the house.

Thanks

He could just order a vault room to be delivered and have walls built around it.

It could mean anything. I would hope it at least means it has sufficient floor support for the weight.

I agree, it could mean anything. I don't think building it in the bathroom is the brightest idea ever. Showers have steam. How are you going to vent that? Better to have it in the bedroom.

Safe doors come in all flavors. From expensive to cheap. You get what you pay for. I do see an advantage in no one in their right mind puts one in a bathroom. Maybe the best safe is one the crooks can't find.

Looks like a closet inside of a bathroom, which is the last place one would want anything gun related due to the humidity.

Says right on the plans "false wall", not showing a regular door.

Maybe a revolving book case. Wink

To me I would take that as simply a "room for a gun safe", not a fortified room in any way.

Yep, a place to hide the safe.

Regardless of the construction/specs, it's definitely NOT big enough! Wink

Easy enough to put the door in the MBR.

We built this house 10 years ago. I called a friend to tell him I get a gun safe in the basement. It was 10x10. His question to me was "why so tiny". As in a lot of things, he was right. So we doubled it to 20x10. Still not full.

You can clearly see that the walls are standard 2x4 walls. As, the false wall is for hiding, like a mirror or something, that isn’t a quilt door. So no, the room isn’t a vault. It’s a room where you can hide your gun safe. As mentioned, having this off the bathroom seems like a terrible idea imo due to humidity from the shower.

A true hardened room is usually in the basement due to weight unless the house is slab on grade, then first floor. The most cost effect vault room construction I know of is concrete and rebar, so that means a lot of weight.

Only 4'11" on the long side means probably about 3' deep based on appearance. Seems more like a room where you would put a larger safe (like a closet). Kinda meh to me.
