I saw this in the local Fairfax County paper. Looks like some of the contestants are from the area. https://golakehavasu.com/event...e-renaissance-faire/ They are outfitted in heavy body armor of the period. 41

I do SCA. Essentially the step between LARPing and this. We still wear armor, but not quite as heavy and fully armored, and the weapons are made of rattan(solid bamboo). MUCH less potential for injury comparatively. me: I wear much heavier armor than required. Almost ACL level. The only parts -required- to be covered are head, neck, hand, wrist, elbow, kidneys, groin, and knees. I just watch the ACL videos and say nope. Plus ACL armor is expensive(~2500$/suit) and gets destroyed FAST. ________________________________________________

Six local Medieval fighters head to national championships By Gregg MacDonald/Fairfax County Times Mar 6, 2018 Updated Mar 7, 2018 Some of the Medieval fighters that will be participating in Arizona starting on March 9. For the record, jousting is the official state sport of nearby Maryland and not of Virginia, but that hasn’t stopped six local men—most from right here in Northern Virginia and Fairfax County—to qualify for the national Medieval fighters championship in Arizona. Ultimate combat fighters from across America are gearing up for the event where fighters will wear real Medieval armor, use real Medieval weapons, and execute real Medieval combat techniques to earn a spot in an international arena. The combats are authentic and not choreographed. From right here in Northern Virginia, six fighters are scheduled to attend: Zoheir El-Eita and Sam Vacation Jenson, both of Arlington, Curtis Carvell of Annandale, Lucas Champion of Farifax, Andrew Dionne of Alexandria and Josh Kearney of Bealeton. The Virginia six are to be among 49 fighters who will appear in the Armored Combat League’s (ACL) National Championships from March 9-11 in Lake Havasu City, Ariz. The event will be part of the 3rd annual London Bridge Renaissance Faire. The winning team will represent the U.S. in the International Medieval Combat Federation’s (IMCF) World Championships in May in Scotland. “These are the nation’s best full-contact martial artists,” said Andre Sinou, of Alloway, N.J., who is an organizer of the National Championship, founder of Team USA Knights, and two-time Gold Medalist at the IMCF World Championships. “The strength of these guys just to wear the gear is unbelievable, let alone combat maneuver in it.” The Armored Combat League (ACL) began to form in 2011 to compete in the World Finals in 2012. The ACL has been steadily growing since its inception from 29 members to more than 450 members throughout nearly 60 chapters in the U.S. and seven other countries. This is the second year the National Championship has been held in Lake Havasu City, Ariz. “The force behind their strikes is unbelievable,” said Raymond Van der Riet, an organizer of the London Bridge Renaissance Faire. “You can’t believe some of them can stand up and walk away.” ACL combats are scheduled for each of the three days of the event. The tournament will consist of fights of one-on-one, three-on-three, five-on-five and the ultimate rush of 16-on-16. Way too small of an arena, you can't even move with that many people in there. Don't weep for the stupid, or you will be crying all day
