So went to place some purchases in the basement fridge today, find everything warm and the freezer items melted. Its an older side by side that holds frozen veggies and drinks mostly. Very useful when company is coming. This is not the dedicated freezer that holds most of our meat, thankfully.

Quick troubleshooting appears to be the compressor capacitor, relay, or overload switch (fan running, compressor not). The defrost timer works fine. Looking online, the capacitor is no longer available for this model, and I am not sure how to tell if that is the problem anyway, versus the other items. It would be about $140 to replace all three if they were available, looks like about $1100 for a new similar sized unit.

Any ideas on troubleshooting further or what to purchase next. Current kitchen fridge is relatively new and have no desire to move it to the basement to replace. Check CL locally, everything looks like crap anyway.

You can search the model for parts numbers, then search the web for the part number to get the best deal, our garage fridge did the same thing, found out it was a bad pc board, ordered it and installed myself, fridge runs fine and it was simple to do, well less than the cost of a service call, did the same for my Sears Kenmore Washer and Dryer until the parts to fix became more expensive than a new washer.

Well, after a little more trouble shooting, I’ve identified the relay appears to be bad. There is some kind of disk inside of it that is all crumbled up. I can find a reported equivalent to that part for $9, so I’ll give it a shot. Briefly looked at CL, but didn’t see much that didn’t look even older than my current fridge.

Good news! Replaced the relay this morning and have a cold fridge again. Thanks for the suggestions!
