Wife and I don't care much for turkey. The deep fried ones are pretty good, but I'm not about to invest that much time and effort into turkey for two. So, we usually grab a mess of lobster for Thanksgiving. I went to the local Co-op just now and ordered up a mess of lobster. The going price for shedders is $7.50/lb which is a little high, but not bad. The gal that weighed them up knows me, knows I'm retired Navy and pointed to the sign on the door "10% discount for veterans all month long in November". She figured the discount and then rounded down to the nearest dollar so she wouldn't have to make change. We will enjoy mass quantities... Be careful when following the masses. I think messes of lobster are measured in stones, but might be furlongs... NRA Life Member - "Fear God and Dreadnaught"

Well, a WHOLE mess is around 15 pounds, but there's only the three of us, so this was a short mess, about 8.5 pounds. Be careful when following the masses. Sometimes the M is silent.

I have an old pal in Gray, ME and the last time we visited he fed us two whole messes of lobster and steamers and we were just two couples. It hurt but was entirely worth it. A day or three later we went to the Maine Diner and had a whole mess of breakfast. You Downeaster's sure know how to feed guests! FYI Local Safeway sells 3-4oz FROZEN lobster tails for $5 on sale or $8 normal price. Once I got annoyed with size and asked them to weigh in front of me. 2.5 oz and less than that for second one. Counter worker apologies and gives me two for free after calling BS. Two big live lobsters here = $50-$60. I stick to frozen tails. Jesse Sic Semper Tyrannis

It seems funny now that back in colonial days, lobster was considered to be trash food suitable only for servants and convicts. I have my own style of humor. I call it Snarkasm.

A lobster that has recently molted - shed it's old, too small shell and grown a new one. Sometimes called a "soft shell" lobster. Much easier to crack and the meat tends to be much sweeter, altho there's less of it in relation to shell size. They're also cheaper because of that. I expect the per-pound price of the actual meat is much the same. Be careful when following the masses. Sometimes the M is silent.

a shedder is a soft shell, a lobster that has just recently molted, or shed its old shell. Many people believe them to be sweeter and better tasting. ETA: Paul types a wee bit faster than I. I have my own style of humor. I call it Snarkasm.

Some Maine lobsters sound delicious, hopefully we get back to NH this summer and we will enjoy some them then. Donald Trump is not a politician, he is a leader, politicians are a dime a dozen, leaders are priceless.

Wow! Sounds wonderful. Enjoy! "Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." -- Justice Janice Rogers Brown "The United States government is the largest criminal enterprise on earth." -rduckwor

Yep. I remember in Boston some guy asked for Surf and Turf. The beef in the turf looked like an overpriced McDonald’s patty. Sad. We had some SWAT training w/ our instructor being NYPD. When he left he went to Walmart and grabbed a couple coolers and stopped by the dry ice place in town. We then took him to a good butcher shop. He filled those babies up for him and all his buddies and Fed Ex’d the coolers back to NYC. He couldn’t believe the cheap prices. I said the same thing about seafood on the coast. All about location.
