Garmin GPS

It looks like a boatload of Garmn GPS units are showing up in Marketplace. Did Garmin stop LifeTime maps or something?? I know new cars get their version of GPS, which is crap, and I am looking to get a used Garmin for my new Ridgeline.

I thought Garmin units used cellular, not actual satellite connections?
I seem to remember losing signal on my Garmin (back when I used them) in bad cellular areas.

It’s been several years since I had a Garmin, but it definitely used GPS. Also, if the Garmin used cellular I think you’d have to pay for another line from your carrier.

The navigation system in my Genesis G70 is excellent. It uses GPS and google maps and knows of recent road closures/openings. And local traffic density.

Waze is what I use daily and have had to show my mom how to use it. Waze, Apple Maps, Google Maps, etc is why GPS units like Garmin are not used anymore.i still have a Garmin sitting around somewhere but see zero need for it. If you ever drive downtown in a major metropolitan area like Houston, you lose the GPS signal due to the tall buildings and then you are screwed trying to get to your destination. You don’t have that problem with your cell phone. Then newer cars with ApplePlay, will let you view Waze or I am sure other navigation apps on the screen in the car. Waze has saved me so many times by routing me a different way due to an accident that had the entire highway shutdown and I just couldn’t see it yet. I highly regretted the one time I ignored Waze suddenly telling me to take an exit when I was on the interstate with more than a 100 miles to go.

I had a top of the line Garmin unit that mounted on the windshield. I shelved that once Waze came out and that's all I use for daily driving.

I can't really come up with a reason to pick up a Garmin if you can use Waze.

Garmin handheld GPS navigation tools still exist. The GPS 67 is one example.

For me, the MINI Cooper navigation system that projects to the HUD is superior, and obviously cannot be supplanted by a separate box on the dash.

Have you looked into OnX?

I have a Garmin 60c that is probably 25 years old. Still works great, but the OnX app is every bit as good and perhaps better if you have GPS in your phone.

Thanks for the info but..we are required to have a stand alone GPS and the 64's are readily used by the team so its easier for me to learn on the 64's..

I still like to keep a Garmin set up when I do long trips. It’s easy to see, load enough to hear, and straight forward to use once you learn to menus. I don’t like relying on my phone for everything and the phone screen has more glare. My navigator just sits there doing just that rather than handling a call or text right as I’m listening which ramp to take. My only built in GPS is Toyota and it’s a pain to use. Voice prompts and entry are a dud and you have to stop the vehicle to type it on the tiny screen.

We had the same thing happen we were E/B approaching Indianapolis in route to FT Wayne the day of the 500 Waze all of a sudden had us take the next exit. I followed the directions and it routed me north of the Interstate I could see the two lane parking lot off to the right. Saved my donkey big time!

I have a Garmin unit in all of my cars. Why? Because I got off the smartphone merry-go-round years ago, I just use a plain flip-style dumb phone for calls and minimalist texting. And my old Garmins work just fine.

Waze is only good for well travelled areas.
I had some issue with it in the hills of Provence, France and parts of Italy.

I prefer GPS and have a Garmin with lifetime Euro and Americas map updates.
Great unit, but not perfect.

I always have an analog backup of paper Michelin maps… beat to reconnoiter the route, then cross check the device.

We do go off the regular path of most tourists.

Waze is great I use it quite a bit CONUS it isn’t very good navigating to the family farm though.
Hahah, a real joke it is.

Anyhow, the farm is the old David Williams homestead… also owned prior by Daniel Shay.
1000 acres on a mountain.

Garmin works fine though.

I bought a new Ford Ranger with a fancy screen device some years back. Wrestled for about 3 weeks with making the phone-map Big Screen thing work. Whichever was dumber, me or it, I fired it finally and put in a decent Garmin. Most of my travel is rural, phone use in vehicle in my state will cost you a fine, and I didn't care for having to talk to my dashboard. There operational issues I was unable to adapt to, and Garmin serves me well. Never tried Wayz. Yet.
