Crusty old curmudgeon |
There is a computer museum but I haven't been to it. There are a couple of other good ones, the Gallatin I believe and a museum of the Rocky mtns. The latter has a number of dinosaur exhibits. Serenity now! |
My wife and I just rode (on bikes) 15 miles of the Hiawatha rail. It's an old transcontinental rail line converted to bicycle use. You pass through 10 tunnels (the longest being 1.6 miles long) and over 7 bridges. It was downhill the entire way and very relaxing and enjoyable. You start in Taft Montana on the Montana / Idaho border. You need to buy a trail pass and a shuttle ticket to bring you back up to the parking area. You can rent bikes at Lookout Pass ski area a few miles away. Ladies and gentlemen, take my advice - pull down your pants and slide on the ice. ʘ ͜ʖ ʘ

Eschew Obfuscation |
I see from Google Maps that Helena is about 3.5 hours south of either entrance to Glacier Nat'l Park. But, if you're up for the drive, you won't be wasting your time. We went 2 years ago under less than ideal conditions (due to wildfires) and it was still breathtaking. A bit closer to Helena is the National Bison Range. We really enjoyed that as well. _____________________________________________________________________ “One of the common failings among honorable people is a failure to appreciate how thoroughly dishonorable some other people can be, and how dangerous it is to trust them.” – Thomas Sowell

Look out for bears in Glacier. This was on the road to Many Glacier Lodge. Over 100 people on the side of the road watching her and a ranger to make sure no one did anything stupid. This was from our front porch at Rising Sun. Both on the east side of the park in September 2014. ETA: Although Missoula is a libtard university town loaded with expatriate Kalifornians, the drive up US 12 to Lolo Pass and Idaho is a hidden gem. Then back to Missoula and drive south up the Bitterroot Valley and then east to the Big Hole Battlefield where Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce held off the 7th Cavalry as they tried to escape to Canada in 1877. If you're into treasure hunting, there's a town just south of Missoula called Philipsburg. They offer the adventure of finding different gemstones, and washing Montana sapphire gravel. I was able to find some sapphires large enough for Dave Truong to make a pendent and a pair of earrings. They also have an old fashioned candy store called the Sweet Palace.
