Is it bad to weld to leaf springs? Does doing so damage their load properties? TIA Big Grin

ETA: I'm not welding a broken spring. I have an add-a-leaf that pivots and it would be fast to weld a pair of keepers on

Yes. Any heat to a spring is "bad".

Yes, the spring would most likely quickly deform or break.

YUP, heating the spring will change it's metallurgy and cause it to crack, break, or simply change it's spring characteristics.

I can't imagine why a kit would be sold that would require such a thing. Would it be possible to add air bags or have the add-a-leaf mount to the shackle somehow?

I thought the only thing a broken leaf spring was good for is to be converted into a custom knife. Wink

Glad I asked. lol I found a leaf spring clamp kit and bought one for each side. Could have made my own but for the price, it made more sense to buy the kits.

Thanks!

Just because you can,
doesn't mean you should

Mechanically clamping is the correct method.
Make sure the clamp parts that contact the springs are not sharp on the edge or the constant contact and flexing of the spring could cause failure.
