Homeless Dude vs Man with family- Denton Square
So, Denton has become absolutely overrun with homeless junkies and mentally ill. Being a liberal town with two colleges, much of the population seems to consider them their pet projects and think they are wonderful and enable them in every way possible. Well, today on our square, which has become the expensive drinking and eating and hangout spot for the college kids and the “see and be seen” crowd, right at noon, a black man up there with his family for a festival thing shot and killed one who was aggressively threatening his small kid. Cue much outrage and wringing of hands. He should probably be grateful he isn’t white..

The fact that he is black, it probably won't be national media.
Glad his kid is ok. Hoping he's around to raise the kid.

Do you have a link to the story, Mel?

From the Denton Record-Chronicle:

A man was fatally shot in an incident on the downtown Square on Saturday afternoon, according to a news release from Denton police.

The Denton Police Department said a preliminary investigation found that the shooting was preceded by a disturbance between a man experiencing homelessness and a male patron. Multiple calls about the shooting were made to 911 at around 12:10 p.m.

The shooting victim was transported to a hospital, where life-saving measures were unsuccessful, the release said. The person has not been identified.

The male patron stayed on the scene and was detained by police for questioning when they arrived.

Nothing official beyond what Denton Record Chronicle and DPD’s two-line statement. What I gather from other sources is a homeless guy who is at the square constantly and known to be aggressive wouldn’t let the guy or guy’s baby pick up a dropped sippy cup, then charged shooter and kids over confrontation. We were just off the square at 11:00 a.m. for an early lunch last Saturday morning and had to pass one sleeping on the sidewalk with his vodka bottle (you could smell him 20 feet away) and were accosted by another begging as we came out of the restaurant.

Bad choice to mess with a man's children.

"Experiencing Homelessness". Horseshit.

Victim was experiencing Threat to child's safety. That trumps homelessness.

I don't know if homie had any weapons, but one does not necessarily need any to be a threat, especially to children.

My retirement job is surrounded on all sides by academic types, so I've almost had to start a notebook to keep up with the current vocab.

Referring to them as "the poor" is out, because it's summative and implies that being poor is their entire identity. It's "People who are poor," which somehow seems more just to them (the academics, I mean. I suspect the poor don't give a crap how you describe their financial status, because they're too busy a) being broke-ass poor or b) trying to figure out how to stop being broke-ass poor).

Same with "The homeless." They're "experiencing homelessness" or "underhoused" or as you note "unhoused."

Don't get me started on "Neurodivergent" or "minor-attracted." Those are the current polite ways of saying "Crazy" and "Pedo" respectively.

So would it be better to say “Man experiencing homelessness experiences gunfire”?

Now you're catching on. Substitute "Male-identifying person" and "gun violence" and you'll be there.

I saw that too. With the newspaper (I use that term loosely)articles as most are owned by conglomerates I can understand. But the OTA, it’s almost like it’s a pre written article given out with the instructions to publish or report this exactly as written.

But by whom it it distributed is the bigger question?

DennisM. A couple used to live near my workplace. The wife was "neurodivergent". I just said she was a whackadoodle.
They have since relocated to New York because "FL isn't safe for trans people" and the rest of the alphabet people.
