Range and charge time. Now 370 miles and super fast charging in minutes, and no more lithium... Interesting look, and the rear wheel donut motor setup is sharp.

Verge Fixed The Two Biggest Electric Motorcycle Problems At Once

Powered by a new Donut Lab solid-state battery, the Verge TS Pro offers up to 370 miles of range

Solid-state batteries promise to be the next big thing and they’re finally coming to road-going vehicles. One of the first companies to offer them is Verge Motorcycles, which said customers can expect a significantly faster recharging time as well as nearly twice the range of conventional batteries.

Set to become available in the coming months, the solid-state battery will be offered in the Verge TS Pro. The company didn’t go into many specifics, but the battery is sourced from Donut Lab and will be offered in 20.2 and 33.3 kWh configurations. The former provides 217 miles (349 km) of range, while the latter increases that figure to 370 miles (595 km).

When it comes time to recharge, a 200 kW NACS charger can deliver 186 miles (299 km) of range in as little as ten minutes. That’s pretty impressive and the company noted the “upgraded battery pack does not affect the motorcycle’s price.”

The good news doesn’t end there as Verge said the solid-state battery will “last for the entire lifetime of the motorcycle,” which is opposed to “thousands of charging cycles” for traditional batteries. The company also noted safety benefits as solid-state batteries “do not catch fire, making them much safer for users and charging locations.”

Solid-State Claim with Big Numbers

For their part, Donut Lab said they’ve created the “world’s first solid-state battery that is ready for use in OEM vehicle manufacturing.” The company went on to say the battery has an energy density of 400 Wh/kg and has been designed to last up to 100,000 cycles. That would seemingly equate to nearly 274 years of daily use.

The company also noted the battery has been “rigorously tested across extreme conditions.” At both -22° F (–30° C) and 212° F (100° C), it retained over 99% of its capacity.

Getting back to the motorcycle, the solid-state Verge TS Pro will start at $29,900 when it arrives in the first quarter. It will feature an electric motor developing 137 hp (102 kW / 139 PS) and 737 lb-ft (998 Nm) of torque. This will enable the bike to rocket from 0–60 mph (0-96 km/h) in just 3.5 seconds.

So I bet my great, great, great grandkids find out that in 2298 the battery only lasts 272 years. Good luck getting anyone from Verge on the hypercom then for customer service.

I like the sound of the range. Their motorcycles look a lot like the Ducati Diavel.

So are they going to put a big one in car and get 3000 miles of range? I won't hold my breath.

Let me know the weight when they have it. If you are going to rail corners, weight and power are the main stats to know.

TS ultra is listed at 518 lbs, 885 ft lbs of torque (I converted from nm), and 201 hp (I converted from Kw)

Personally I don't care for the type/style of the motorcycle they're putting it in but the Verge battery and motor sound like the leap in technology we need.

Toyota is saying they'll be offering cars with solid state batteries in 2027. Battery vehicles are making more sense now.

Imagine what will be involved in changing/ balancing the rear tire on that thing.

Yes, although not 3000 miles but 18 min full recharge times...

What’s limiting the 0-60mph to 3.5 seconds? With less than 1/10th the torque my 1998 ZX-9R hits 60 in under 3 seconds. Even my 1986 FJ1200 does it in 3 flat and it weighs 70 pounds more.

My guess is there is a traction control system that is controlling the acceleration.

After reading specs on Verge's site I'm not so impressed with its range of "up to 217 miles" in standard $30,000 configuration.

That range is based on stop and go city traffic where batteries are efficient. The "56mph highway" range drops to 124 miles. At the more realistic speed of 75 mpg the range will be well under 100 miles.

With the larger battery that costs an extra $5,000 city range is 370, steady 56 mph gets you 196 miles, and I would guess at 75 mph from fully charged to completely depleted you'll be walking by around 140 miles.

If their claim of fast charging in 10 minutes is true that's much quicker than current battery motorcycles. Wonder if the larger battery takes double that time? And if that accelerated charge is hard on the battery so using a slower charge rate is recommended?

EV Vehicles have been working on solid state batteries forever.

If they have truly mastered the technology then it could be a game changer for the car and motorcycle industry…

Toyota has been touting solid state battery technology for decades, yet nothing for cars.

That’s not sportbike light but it’s also not a porker.

Those charge times are NOT going to be off a L2 charger by any means. And you are right about the range going faster sustained speed. Cornering, the range will be under 100 miles. And where the twisty roads are you aren’t going to find some kind of DC fast charger.

Another nothing burger E-bike. It could certainly be a commuter but who wants to commute on a motorcycle to their job these days? With all the distracted driving via smartphones? No thanks. Motorcycles remain something of sport for me, and that means in a full suit leaned over half the ride, and whacking it WFO out of every corner. + I’ve been dailying an EV for 12 years. Get ham fisted with the throttle, and you are correct, range goes to 1/2 of stated or even less.

Why would anyone ever do that, especially if they charge decently quick. There will be a sweet spot for range because no one will want to pay for a 3000 mile battery or carry all that weight around. That sweet spot will have to be figured out but 400 would be plenty for me.

Put it in an off-road bike and I might be interested…but not at that price.

Now work on the $29,000 problem.

There are of course high-end bikes costing this much or even more. The top-end Honda Goldwing MSRP, for example, starts there, but that bike is a "full-dress" tourer with a 1.8L engine and bristling with bells and whistles.
