San Diego-originated California burrito proliferates:

"Taco Bell has added a whole new calorie-laden treat to its menu: burritos loaded with French fries on top of the usual fixings.

The fast food chain, based in Irvine, California, is offering its own version of Cali burritos, a classic that originated in San Diego…"

Every taco shop here in San Diego has them.

I thought Taco Bell already had a burrito with potatoes in it but I can't find it on their menu now. Oh well, I guess what's old is new again.

Edit: I guess it's now called a cheesy potato burrito.

I never saw any of those at Robertos, or Hilbertos, or any of the other 'bertos in San Diego.

I heard Taco Bell was racist because they didn't serve french fries. Guess that's fixed now.

Should've gotten out more. When it comes to fish tacos, claiming Rubios are outstanding is like saying McDonalds has outstanding burgers.

I surely do. I only get to whackyland 3 to 4 times a year. I split time between Palm Springs and Sandy Eggo. What would you suggest? Recommendations are appreciated.

You called?

Cali burritos are found at many bertos in SD. I skip them for the surf and turf fries available at some bertos. I recently realized I could swap carne asada for carnitas and made the best thing even better.

That may be why I missed these burritos with fries.

The carne asada burrito at Robertos is one of best meals one can hope for.

Fish tacos.... long ago, Rubios fish tacos had everyone beat, none close. Back then he had two stands, one out at State and the one there along the bay. Then, since everybody wanted them, he started adding units. That worked pretty well for quite awhile, but then things started changing. Menus expanded, goodness suffered.

Then, the Rubios sold to some east cost food conglomerate and things got a lot more ordinary.
I think that has changed again, too, but I don’t live there anymore. The fish tacos around here are awful.

The best fish taco that I know of in San Diego is found at Bay Park Fish Co. (a restaurant). Get the halibut upgrade for ~$1 extra.

I know that place. It’s right there by Siesels meat market.

It is easier parking than Point Loma Seafood. Smile

I have to admit that when I saw California burrito the image that popped into my head was re-fried beans, tofu, lettuce, and bean sprouts, wrapped in kale.

I remember stopping at Albuquerque , NM on Amtrak many years for a hour long fuel/rest stop.

Tired of the train food, I stocked up on burritos to eat while traveling, these were sold by vendors at the train stop.

To my surprise, they had diced potatoes in them, delicious, never had burritos like that before, got 5, wish I had gotten 10! Smile

Have never seen potato burritos ever again anywhere else since then, 2006.

I'm sure the Taco Bell one will suck, but when I went to SDSU there were 3 real good Mexican spots right near campus. Loved getting the Cali Burritos. Had them a couple other places in San Diego, maybe 5 or 6 places total, and they were all awesome. These weren't even really Mexican restaurants, more like one off Mexican fast food, or indoor taco stands? You just need find an authentic Mexican spot and you would probably be good to go. Skip the chain food affair.

Indeed it is. And Siesels is the best meat market in San Diego. Two good reasons to visit that spot.

Also, I ought to say that Rubio's "Pesky Plate" is pretty good. Two Fish Tacos Especial with chips and a small cup of beans.

French fries do not belong in burritos. Must've been invented by some idiot who had very little appreciation of the real San Diego treat, the fish taco.

Want a real burrito, a fully loaded al pastor super burrito from any number of San Francisco taquerias. Several pounds of goodness.
