Do No Harm, Do Know Harm |
I'd like to put in a backup camera in my Jeep. I suppose I've become spoiled from driving cars with them. I have a basic radio with no fancy screen, so my initial expectation is to use a rearview mirror with a screen built in. The Ford Explorer I use at work has one of these, and it works fine for the purpose. I've read unimpressive reviews of wireless ones that connect to your phone. But the damn kit I'm finding is $500. Now, that's the same as my deductible, and it would pay for itself the first time it helped me avoid an "oopsie", but that's a chunk of change. https://www.extremeterrain.com...-mirror-J101867.html Anyone have any suggestions? Or is the above going to be my best bet? Knowing what one is talking about is widely admired but not strictly required here. Although sometimes distracting, there is often a certain entertainment value to this easy standard. -JALLEN "All I need is a WAR ON DRUGS reference and I got myself a police thread BINGO." -jljones

Aftermarkets are pricey for these. I've found that turning my head around is cheaper, but driving a lot of rentals I have gotten used to them as well.

I'd look into replacing your radio with something like a Panasonic NEX unit with a display, something like this: Link I'm planning to get some version of the NEX for my wife's Odyssey, as she has already backed into somebody. Our insurance rates were raised substantially as a result. Don't need the navigation, I'll get a model that has Apple CarPlay. _________________________ “Remember, remember the fifth of November!"

Garmin has one that connects to several of their GPS's. My Native American Name: "Runs with Scissors"

It seems they are pretty proud of that spare tire mount for the camera. That basic idea is all over Amazon and Ebay for ~$150. For example: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078...e8-9c63-45750980d7ef There are others that vary a little on the details. I'm not sure that JK specific bracketry is worth $350, but YMMV.

What kind of Jeep are you putting this in ? And the only time I’ve ever hit anything was while I was using a back up camera.. hit my wife’s old car with her new one with her in it, leaving for our anniversary dinner. It literally couldn’t have been any worse. The problem is that the periferal vision on some isn’t as good and they give you a false sense of confidence. And if you’re driving a 2 door wrangler a backup cam is just a waste of your time/money anyway

Your caveat of no screen makes it expensive. Any wireless aftermarket one I've see is not very good. In my old truck I put in just and in expensive hardwired one with a small camera and it was nice. I put a forward camera in it as well. Problem is finding a place for the screen that doesn't look like you just stuck it on there.

Maybe look at getting a radio head unit with backup camera capabilities. It’s a clean install, nothing else sitting on your dash. You will have Bluetooth connectivity to your phone. Some you can use your phone apps on the screen. ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ

Garmin has a backup camera, model BC-30, that uses wifi to transmit to many of the Garmin GPS units that either suction cup mount to your windshield, or use a bean bag mount to sit on top of the dashboard. The Garmin DriveAssist 50LMT or DriveAssist 51LMT integrate GPS, dash camera, and the ability to display the image from a BC-30 rearview camera. I was able to find the DriveAssist 50 LMT, Garmin factory re-furb, for $105, and the BC-30 for $139, for a total of $244, that gave me backup camera, GPS, and dash camera. Installation consists of mounting the BC-30 to your rear license plate bracket, connecting the power wire to the vehicle's back-up light, and plugging the dash unit into a cigarette lighter thingy. I have used Garmin aviation equipment for maybe 25 years. It does the job very well, and any time that I needed support I always reached a U.S. based support center with very helpful people whose native language was English and who always had a great attitude. That is enough to sell me on Garmin! הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים
