Storage question for rifles
Does anyone see any problems with putting a wooden dowel rod in the barrel of shorter rifle so that it will fit in a gun rack in my safe?

Poly or fiberglass might be less likely to retain moisture and promote rust?

wood holds moisture which will promote rusting in the barrel

You'd be better off with plastic like this Rifle Rod starter kit

Rust. Living in the desert I sometimes forget about obvious rust issues. Thanks!

Great, isn’t it? Smile

I built a platform for the side that my shorter rifles are on.
Don’t like the idea of something in the barrel.

Brass rod pushed through a cork? Brass is less likely to damage the rifling, last longer than plastic. Cork or plastic cap to keep it from slipping completely down the bore.

Where to get brass rod? Good question. Metal supplier comes to mind, but you likely want less than 1/4” to fit in the 22 bores.

Amazon has a variety of brass rods

Carbon fiber arrows are pretty slim, some extremely so. I don't shoot them though so I've got nothing to measure.

+1 Also, you might could store something under the platform like 22 ammo, etc.

Ace hardware usually has plenty of brass rod in various sizes.

I just sit cases of ammunition in the bottom of my safes that has shorter rifles and shotguns in it...

That is not a bad idea either. A metal ammunition box would work for my SBR I’ll bet.

My shorter long guns sit on stacks of loaded magazines.

I ordered a larger set of those... Came today. Hopefully this weekend I can set it up. Problem is in the room the large safe is in, there isn't room for the contents of the safe, outside of the safe. Sounds strange, but true.

THIS. My butt of my shorter AR's sits on ammo cans filled with 223 ammo.
