There are supported and unsupported chambers in many 1911s as well. It's nothing new. I've always thought the supported chamber was made for various higher pressure rounds but, most common rounds like .40 S&W, .45 ACP, 9mm and such did not generate enough pressure to require a supported chamber. Now, race gun cartridges like souped up 38 Supers and such is where the supported chamber is needed.
