We went on vacation last week. It had been several years since I drank a rum and coke. Was thinking of trying some type of Caribbean rum. At the liquor store the gent stocking shelves recommended the original Bumba rum. Said it was very good straighten on the rocks or mixed. Hold its own against more expensive rums.
Anyone else try this? Slightly sweet, very smooth. I really like it. Might need another bottle….

It’s not bad, my big kid bought a bottle when he last came to visit, very sweet (to me). But since I had Covid I lost my taste and everything is off now (still). It’s also 35% v 40% (which is the norm)

Bumbu is overly sweet with a bunch of added sugar and it's only 70 proof.

Do you mean ‘Bubu”

It is a great rum, straight or in a rum and coke.

I use to be a Mt Gay fan for rum and coke, but since most bartender think Bacardi or some other clear rum, I call it a “dark and Diet”

I recently discovered Plantation Rum, they have a pricy “pineapple” but there Original Dark is a better price point around $20 here.

I also like the Bacoo Rum, 5 yo, is similarly priced.

Pampero is an excellent rum, I’d also strongly recommend Santa Teresa 1796 and Diplomatico Reserva Exclusivo

Bumbu gets a lot of hate from rum enthusiasts. It’s too sweet and underproof. Lots of better choices out there, but if it works for you, go for it.

If you like that, try some Plantation XO or Diplomatico Riserva Exclusiva. Waaay better. And if you’re really feeling adventurous, try an agricole.

Must be I need sweetening up! I’m on my second bottle. Probably counterproductive, I’m mixing it with Diet Coke! I may try some of the higher end rums mentioned, but I’m scared I might like them!
Years ago my neighbor mixed us some Mia Tias that they discovered in Hawaii. As I recall, silver and gold rum mixed with a splash of pineapple and orange juice, and Myers’s dark rum floated on top. Definitely a sipper.

My favorite is Appleton's rum, they have a number of grades, with the higher grades really being sipping rum, rather than mixing. Their regular "Reserve" level is about perfect. I've never tried this one. Brugal, from the Dominican Republic is good, also.

I lived in Puerto Rico for a few years. The best rum I have ever tasted is Ron del Barralito.

What a found interesting about rum is it varies wildly from location to location. I tend to want a sipping rum, but that’s not everybody’s thing. Rum nuts look for bottles that have a funky, grassy note to them. (There is in fact a bottle called “The Funk”). That’s not for everybody.

One thing to remember is that most rums are made from sugarcane molasses and are usually “dosed”, or have sugar added to them. Dosing is controversial in the industry and some countries tightly regulate it (like Martinique). Most rum is barreled in bourbon barrels.

A smaller segment are rhum agricoles, which are made from pure sugarcane juice, not molasses, and are barreled in cognac barrels. They are quite different from traditional rums, tend to be funky and have more complexity. They are most often found in former French colonies like Martinique or Haiti.

I don’t have a particularly sophisticated palate when it comes to rum, but the variations are interesting. A shot of Barbancourt 15 with an ice cube is one hell of a good drink, though.

I took the rum side street from bourbon and went down the rabbit hole. It's been an expensive detour. Tasty and fun but expensive. You'll find options that run the gamut from sickly sweet to grassy to deep funk with some diesel thrown in.

Haven't had Bumbu. Highly recommend Doorly's, the 12 yr isn't too much and is great for the price. RL Seale 10 yr as well.

Our go-to for rum on the rocks is
Captain Morgan Private Stock.
It’s ~$44 for 1.75L and available at most stores.
We have tried a lot of different rums, and will take note of what gets posted here, but so far always go back to CMPS.
