Hoppin john, turnip greens, and hoe cakes.

Hoe cakes are just cornmeal mixed with hot water, salt, and some cayenne pepper into a thinnish batter. They're fried like pancakes in bacon grease or whatever.

In the past we usually did a seafood feast. This year we're having a bone-in ham with baked beans and potato salad. Simple but yummy.

That right there! Although we also have some skillet fried corn with plenty of salted butter.

Been snacking on homemade meatballs off and on all day watching football.

At noon, the St. Louis style ribs went on the BGE at 235F. Should be eating between 1.5 to 2.25 hours.

Need to get off my backside and cook up a batch of cast iron cornbread.

This year we had pot roast with potato's, carrots, onions in the crock pot and steamed sugar snap peas. It was great as usual with left overs for tomorrow night.

Pork lion and sauerkraut, of course. I put bacon, diced onions and apples in my kraut, too. Baked in the cast iron Dutch oven. Served with mashed taters and gravy. Oh yum.

Mrs M-11 does not allow kraut to be cooked indoors, so I grill the brats then put them into a casserole dish, cover with kraut and heat it all up over the coals.

It's not traditional, but this year it was navy bean soup made with leftover ham and ham bone. Very easy and tasty.

I made a homemade batch of sauerkraut after the sauerkraut fermenting thread on sigforum this fall. I had my homemade sauerkraut and pork sausage yesterday. Turned out pretty good!

I have a few SIGs.

Hoppin John, greens and corn bread. We go to my moms for New Year’s Day dinner and she makes a big bowl of it. She adds ham to the bacon in the hoppin John. I like to add a healthy splash of Tabasco. Been eating this on New Year’s Day for as long as I can remember and we’re not even from the south. Just been a thing we do.

Al dente bowtie pasta, black eyed peas [coins], baby spinach [folding paper money] with thinly sliced onion and crushed garlic, a pinch of red pepper flakes, cooked in chicken broth, topped with shredded Italian 3-cheese blend.

We’ve had it for over 15 years and it seems to work reasonably well for good fortune for us, with an occasional setback as would be expected.

Will be doing kraut and pork later, along with a Cajun 15-bean soup using some leftovers and bone from a honey-baked ham.

Apparently we're doing pheasants in the Instant Pot from now on, based on the rave reviews yesterday. After brining, I smoked them for 20 minutes on the grill, then used a new recipe to make a stew-like concoction. Next year I'm going to tweak the recipe to include something to give it some kick (chopped peppers maybe). The other Instant Pot made the traditional Black Eyed Peas.
