SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Defying the NCAA, California opened the way Monday for college athletes to hire agents and make money from endorsement deals with sneaker companies, soft drink makers, car dealerships and other sponsors, just like the pros.

The first-in-the-nation law, signed by Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom and set to take effect in 2023, could upend amateur sports in the U.S. and trigger a legal challenge.

Maybe someday my kid can get a lucrative endorsement for his role in college football marching band.

I’ve been saying for several years:

College Football is now Semi-Pro. There’s just too much money involved.

They should at least have to pay back their scholarships.

Does this mean that all the 5-star recruits will be going to California colleges?

I've felt for years that colleges should drop the pretense about it not being a for profit enterprise, with everyone involved making fortunes out of it - except the athletes who make it possible.

Giving up a vast amount of TV money.

And if the California schools get pushed out of the NCAA, they then form a competing league.

Other states are looking at passing similar laws. The NCAA is going to lose this one.

Hell, there are pre-teen kids online who have their own "brand" Roll Eyes and are hawking consumer goods for any company who will pay these little propaganda machines, so, for college-age "kids" with some degree of actual talent to be doing this is no surprise at all. Gotta get that money, y'see. Gotta start as soon as possible. Gimmmeegimmeegimmeegimmee.

It's a generation of frauds and opportunists. They're soulless.

How would California create a competing league? They have 4 schools that are of any national consequence in either of the big 4 sports. The NCAA could cut them loose and walk away. You think the people in California are going to just stop watching March Madness?

Schools make a ton of money off of collegiate sports and some of it is spread to others sports that don't have the national spotlight and can't stand up without the money.

Also consider that if an athelete has this contract, how does the school interfer with the employment contract from a sponsor? What if the athlete wants to do the kneel shit and Nike sponsors him? Can the school prohibit that activity? Was that an NCAA rule?

Are we going to start having bidding wars for colleges over pay? This school pays QBs more but this one pays RBs more?

Many questions on employment law relative to college sports and how much can the school interfer or put up guidelines for endorsments, if at all.

That is by today’s rankings.
Once California schools can offer kids money or line them up with corporate endorsements there is not a 5 star player that would go anywhere not in California.

California has 24 Division 1 schools. I bet within 5 years of these kids getting paid (only in California) at least 20 would be powerhouses if not all of them.
20 teams is plenty for their own league.

Be interesting to see which kills NCAA sports first males playing as females or athletes getting paid.

If CA does this and it sticks other states will follow. They will have no choice as top talent will go to CA schools.

Let's be honest if your an 18-19-year-old and you can get paid endorsement deals for some schools and not from others where might you go.

I have no idea the legal framework that is involved here but if CA does it and it stays other states will have to follow.

For years I thought college athletes shouldn't get paid but it's hard, for me, to make that argument anymore, when schools are making millions off there teams.

This explains what some of the consequences and meaning of it all. It's not a giant money grab as some are sepeculating.

What's Next After California Signs Game Changer Fair Pay to Play Act Into Law?

Ultimately, the amount of money moving thru the collegiate athletic system is staggering with the athletes seeing none of it whatsoever. While I enjoy college sports, I'm also of the belief that some compensation should be afforded these players considering the head coaches are able to negotiate their own sponsorship/advertising deals, the likeness of the players are used for video games, advertisement and marketing meanwhile the players are restricted in employment, gift receiving to include financial gain, and movement to transfer without consequences. If a kid is a 300lb lineman but the student meal card restricts him to a limited amount...where else is he going to get his calories? Wants to take a date to the movie or, a meal but, families comes from a family on public assistance..can't get a job for side money.

There's zero restrictions on how somebody on a music scholarship can't sign a recording deal or, play-for-pay at a club or, a literary major is able to have their work published and gain royalties from the sales. Math major work as an analyst at a financial or, engineering firm and get compensated. One of the proposals which I think is reasonable is having a modest compensation for athletes held in trust until they graduate or, have completed their time in school.

Who are they going to play? Other California schools? There is a league for you. How bad off is California that they need this as an additional tax revenue stream?

I hope the NCAA sticks to it's rules. How does a state law trump the rules of a national athletic governing body that covers all states?

What if Minnesota passes a law that they allow checking in college basketball? Will the NCAA bow to that?

agreed

athletic programs / NCAA will act like its the end of the world but life will go on

heck - some schools might actually start to re-think the madness and get back to true STUDENT athletes

in fact that's probably what we'll end up with - a 'paid tier' of crazy good athletes / schools (ie Power 5) and a second tier of non paid

they've already opened the Pandoras Box by the 'Cost of Attendance' Stipends

not really going to affect non-money sports IMO
